Yikes! This is really ugly! One correction, though - neither Swissair nor Sabena are part of the One World Alliance. American gives miles to qualifying on Swissair and Sabena, and they also codeshare, but Swissair is not part of the One World Alliance. I would imagine that tickets issued by American for codeshare flights will be OK (reschedulable) and I can't imagine Swissair leaving all those passengers stranded.

...their troubles began after the tragic crash near Nova Scotia two years ago. In addition to immediate cash assistance to survivors, they were also being sued.

Sorry, should have said "cash assistance to families of the victims" since of course noone survived.

I would check your travel insurace policy to see if you are covered for the failure of a scheduled airline and if so you may get your money back. Likewise if you booked your ticket with a credit card you could phone them up as many cards may offer to refund your money. <BR> <BR>It is not looking good as announcements were made in Zurich airport saying that Swissair was not in a position to offer refunds. <BR> <BR>I thought that Delta was going to reduce flights to Zurich this month but now , things may change. <BR> <BR>Good luck to all those involved.

Just noticed this good Q& A sheet on the BBC website. The link is <BR> <BR>http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/bus...00/1575582.stm <BR> <BR>Hope this helps

On the BBC site there seems to be a glimmer of hope -- some banks are ante-ing up after all.

We called American after not getting through to Swissair and they said they didn't know if they could do anything. Part of our flights were to be on American. I've called the credit card company and discovered they haven't charged the card yet. I am to call to see when and if Swissair will process the transaction. The credit company said they can deny the charges if it is in the authorization stage, which takes about 8 hours. I think I have a pretty good chance of getting out of this one.

Thanks for the BBC links. I've got my travel agent scrambling, but she has no info yet.... If I have to cancel, at least *maybe* Visa will be able to get me a refund.

Swissair is resuming some flights tomorrow, including some flights to the US. Here's the website, unfortunately in German: http://www.swissair.com/news_crossairflights.htm <BR> <BR>Here is babelfish's barely adequate translation. Looks like pretty good news: <BR> <BR>"Those in the following specified Swissair flights are executed on Thursday, 4 October 2001, in accordance with the flight plan times from Zurich. Issued Swissair tickets keep their validity, reservations for 2./3. October can until 12 October in the context of the ticket validity be transferred free of charge."
