Swiss Residency for an Australian
My wife & I, in our mid 50's and our 18yr old daughter are wanting to live in Switzerland for a number of years. We have an independent income and so don't need to and don't want to work. Can you please give us some direction as to what we need to do. We are travelling over to Europe in December for a few months and whilst we are there, we would like to perhaps see some Migration Lawyers/Consultants. Can you make any suggestions as to a good Migration Consultant/Lawyer who can speak English that we could meet whilst over there. If there are any good websites which may help we would appreciate that. If there are any pitfalls that we need to look out for, we would appreciate knowing. We have read that in order to gain Residency, one of the things that we need is a long term rental lease for a home or apartment, but how can we get this prior to gaining residency?

Forget Switzerland. Residency requirements for non-EU/EEA citizen are probably among the most stringent in Europe (if not in the world), and only a tiny number of permits are issued each year by individual cantons, and usually only for millionaires etc who are expected to make a substantial investment into local economy.

You need money, lots of it, patience, the ability to speak at least one of the four languages. Chose a Canton and a village that has a record of letting people in. Then chose a lawyer.
Then think about moving into the EU close to your chosen village.
Then do what ever the lawyer says.
I've seen it done, but hey if you want to do a crazy thing you gotta do crazy stuff

Sorry - you can't organize this IN Switzerland. You're citizens of Australia and need to organize the whole thing through the Swiss embassay/consulate there. They will tell you what requirements you have to meet (I haven;t a clue since a yong daughter may complicate things for a couple who otherwise could be considered retirees and would obviously significantly increase the income you would need to demonstrate) and a local attorney specializing in emigration can help you.

Though I know a few Swiss people I've never looked into their immigration/residency requirements but if you have a look on the australian immigration website, www.immi.gov.au and see what is involved for someone to get a residency visa here under similar conditions you'll get an idea of what the system could be like, but them on what has been said in posts above, sounds like you'll need to double/quadruple or whateverfold the hurdles.
www.projectvisa.com should take you to the relevant Swiss web site.
And even to go to Europe for a holiday these days, what is called the Schengen treaty or visa system limits you to a 90 day stay within any 180 days, visa free for Aussies and quite a few other countries.
That means once there 90 days, legally you need to depart for another 90 - you could use England and Ireland and a few other non EU countries for 90 and then back into Switzerland or other countries that Schengen applies to.

Project Visa will not actually take you too far re Cantonal residency requirements and http://www.ch.ch/private/00029/00030...x.html?lang=en may not be a lot more help other than to confirm the restrictions.
http://www.switzerland-4you.com/residence_permit.htm may the type of organisation that could help in perhaps looking at resiency for retirement rather than as a work permit which residency permits seem to be combined with.
http://www.englishforum.ch/permits-v...ed-canton.html is a forum that may help and then http://temasekclub.multiply.com/reviews/item/17 might be helpful too, they at least listing the different permits, and as you can see not really any that mention not working - maybe they're used to the Swiss wanting out to retire rather than others coming in!
