Jane, I know how tempting it is to fine tune your planning..the travel times are long and it is obviously best to plan well for efficiency. Now you have a good sense of how well coordinated Swiss transport is and the logistics of your days.

I found it useful to have my days 'loosely' planned with 10 or so day potential excursions (not to do them all, just options) on my wishlist for our 8 night stay in Wengen, then could choose last minute based on weather. So, I well knew that a round trip along the lake to Meiringen and bus round to Grindelwald and whichever option for return to Wengen was pretty time consuming, without factoring in what we wanted to do in between. Our bus ride was so gorgeous, we had to get off and just follow a trail, the yellow signs give indicators how long a walk might take, and to be honest, I don't recall what we initially planned to do, but it was a delightful day. Lovely bus ride, nice stroll, checked out the sawmill at Schwarzwaldalp, so peaceful, so beautiful.

You don't have to see the "sights" to have an amazing time.
You do need to have some idea of how often the bus runs, and when the last cablecar is!

For our upcoming visit in June, I have a wish list again, but I know we will have a wonderful time even if I don't 'tick them off' my list.

Even if doing this mainly by train I would reorganize it:

Grindelwad - Kl Scheidegg Jungfrau kl Schiedegg walk to Mannlichen and then take the cable car down to Grindelwald.

"day # 1 in BO Jungfraujoch-AM and Mannlichen-PM. WAB train Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg. JB train to Jungfraujoch. After a couple of hours of at the top activities, take the JB to Kleine Scheidegg. You could earn 1 hour of your walking goal by getting off the train at Eigergletscer and hiking down to Kleine Scheidegg. Next take the WAB to Wengen. You could walk to Wengernalp (35 min) and board the WAB there for the ride to Wengen. Walking Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen would earn you 2 hours. Walk 5 min through the village to the Luftseilbahn Wengen-Männlichen (LWM) cable car. Take this 5 min ride to Männlichen. After exiting you can climb 371 ft to the top of Männlichen ( I will give you 1/2 hr credit) for an excellent view looking north to Thunersee, Interlaken, and Schynige Platte. South to the Wetterhorn to the Jungfrau Massif to the Schilthorn with Tschuggen in the foreground. If you don’t climb to the top just go to the observation point. For a view of Wengen and the Lauterbrunnen valley. Across the valley you will see Mürren, the Shilthorn and Grütschalp. Next stop Kleine Scheidegg. This is the walk you have been waiting for. Worth 1-1/2 hrs.Return to Grindelwald on the WAB. " -- dugi_otok

The following is roughly what we would try to do-

Jungfraujoch-AM and Mannlichen-PM. weather permits

WAB Train from Gridelwald to Kleine Scheidegg, then JB train to Junfraufoch. At the top for couple of hours, train to Kleine Scheidegg. Take the walk from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen, walk through the village to the LWM cable car. Take 3 min ride to Mannlichen. Climb up to the top of Mannlichen (Royal walk) . Walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (must do). Train KS to Grindelwald

Not sure if we have enough time to do both KS to Wengen (2 hours) and Mannlichen to KS (1h 30) walks. If not, we can skip KS to Wengen walk and take the 35 min walk from KS to Wengernalp instead. For Eiger trail from Eigergletscer to KS, time is also a factor, not sure if we can do all these in half day.

" Question: is the MIB train closely located near the Meiringen station platform the train arrived at? "

I fear that you will have to walk up to 2 minutes.

PalenQ Apr 7th, 2019 08:55 AM

IME 2.05 minutes.

Would like to plan # day 4 in BO, originally suggestions are First to Bachalpsee hikes (see quote below) . After learning about the many hikes in Murren, still would consider going back to do Grutschalp to Murren (via Winteregg) hike route on the last day possible, between First and this one, which to choose? how to plan a day with this hike plus Schynige Platte if not done yet, or thunersee steamer and the old medieval town? Please advice.

"Walk from your hotel to the Gondolabahn Grindelwald -First (GGF) station at the east end of the main street. Take the 6 person gondola to the top to the top. This is one of the longest gondola rides, 3-1/2 miles in 20 min over green pastures and pine trees. The usual suspects are seen from the terrace-Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Fiescherhorn, Eiger, Jungfrau to the south. After taking in the scenery take the Cliff Walk. Then for walking take the 3 hour round trip to Bachalpsee, two small lakes. After exploring the lakes return to the station. You can ride the gondola down or take one of the adventure ways down. If it is mid afternoon you may want another activity. Perhaps take the BOB to Lauterbrunnen to visit Trümmelbach Falls, an engineering phenom where you go inside the falls by elevator and a stair climb. Then go into Interlaken for dinner." _ dugi_otok

Thank you

Please also find the following summary of Day #2 itinerary in BO

PalenQ Apr 7th, 2019 12:25 PM

After learning about the many hikes in Murren, still would consider going back to do Grutschalp to Murren (via Winteregg) hike route on the last day possible, between First and this one, which to choose?

First to Bachalpsee is more interesting because of the lake and views. Grutschalp-Murren walk is flat along cliff's edge and super busy in high season. The famous restaurant at Winteregg has a popular outdoor cafe serving traditional Farmers; Omelette of the area and rural Switzerland.

Is it going to be crowded in June?

Day # 2 BO Schilthorn and Murren

BOB from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen. Arrive for 9AM start time for ride to Schilthorn. Cross the street for the Cable Car/Train (BLM). Cable car to Grutschalp, then train to Murren. The cable car/train will take about 30 min. A 15 min walk through Murren to catch the Cable Car - 2 sections of the Luftseilbahn Stechelberg-Mürren-Schilthorn (LSMS) up to Schilthorn, Murren to Birg (13 min), then Birg to Schilthorn (4 min). Spend about an hour at the summit.

Descend by LSMS: Cable Car to Birg, get off and do the thrill walk. Cable Car Birg to Murren. Have a view of the village. Hike from Murren down through Gimmelwald to Stechelberg, through the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Lauterbrunnen, walk through the village, take train back to Grindelwald.

Adelaidean Apr 7th, 2019 01:59 PM

This is what I planned, but I walked a trail to Mürren...by the time I got to the Schilthorn cablecar, the webcam showed thick cloud and no views.
So, plan B. ....

Important to be flexible.

Let me test my understanding. You have previously taken the 15 min train ride, Grutschalp to Murren, on day #2. You are suggesting that on day #4 that you go back to Grutschalp and walk the same route, same views, Grutschalp to Murren, as your train ride 2 days before. Makes no sense. The time of each day is too precious for repeats.

jane86 Apr 7th, 2019 07:47 PM

Sorry for the confusion, I did not want to do the same route twice, cable car to first seems interesting. I will take a look of those trails, then decide. Thanks

neckervd Apr 7th, 2019 11:52 PM

As I said some 200 posts above: there is nothing to decide now. All will depend on the weather.

jane86 Apr 8th, 2019 06:19 AM

Good afternoon or morning!

Thanks for your reply @ neckervd, I totally understand your concerns, I got the points on the weather condition at the very beginning of this thread, and from further reminders and warnings. I also appreciate the option list for bad weather you provided in the above post earlier. Your advice on travel are always spot on.

I am just trying to get some options of mountain activities which with modifications could fit bad weather day, such as low elevation hikes even though there won't be any views on top of the mountain, Please humorize me, and allow me to do so.

Thank you

A little more info on First.

BO Day plan #4 Walk from your hotel to the Gondolabahn Grindelwald -First (GGF) station at the east end of the main street.
Take the 6 person gondola all the way to the top station at First passing the stations Bort and Grindal.
This is one of the longest gondola rides, 3-1/2 miles in 20 min over green pastures and pine trees.
The usual suspects are seen from the terrace at the top-Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Fiescherhorn, Eiger, Jungfrau to the south.
To the east, you can see the path to Grosse Scheidegg Pass, and to the west, Kleine Scheidegg. Below is the Grindelwald basin.
After taking in the scenery take the Cliff Walk.
Then for walking take the scenic 2 hour round trip to Bachalpsee, two small lakes.
After exploring the lakes return to the station. You can ride the gondola down or take one of the adventure ways down.

https://www.swisspasses.com/excursio...irst/index.htm ( click on slide show)

An option to the walk to Bachalpsee would be to take the 2 hour walk to Grosse Scheidegg followed by a bus ride back to Grindelwald.

There are numerous other hikes in the area but they are in the more strenuous category or are much longer.

Melnq8 Apr 8th, 2019 12:51 PM

This thread is pretty "humorizing".

dugi_otok Apr 8th, 2019 01:05 PM

A pair of optional days.

1-For arrival day in place of Schynige Platte: Leave Montreux at 8:12 train to Grindelwald arriving 11:08 (via Visp, Spiez).
Drop off luggage at your hotel.
Take First excursion as described in Post # 418. (Have lunch at restaurant at First)

2- For BO day plan #4b Combine Schynige Platte with Thunersee Steamer

One possible itinerary.

Leave Grindelwald (BOB) 7:49. Arrive Schynige Platte 9:37.
If that is too early for you leave Grindelwald (BOB) 8:49. Arrive Schynige Platte 10:17.
Spend time at the top until taking the train at 12:21 back to Wilderswil.
Then a 10 min bus ride to Interlaken West arriving at 13:31.
Steamer leaves at 14:10.
After 10 stops the Steamer arrives at Thun at 16:20.

Explore Thun as you wish.
The train station is across the street from the Steamer dock.
Catch a Train back to Grindelwald (1hr15min) leaves every half hour.
The train ride is along the south shore of the Thunersee. Change in Spiez.
