Well then how about scrubbing Grutschalp-Murren walk but then take the cliffside walk from Murren down to Gimmelwald where you catch the cable to Stechelberg.

That is a very short walk. Part of walk #17 on this map. If you walk all the way to Stechelberg it is 1-1/2 hrs
17. Mürren–Gimmelwald–Stechelberg (approx. 1 h 30 min.) Follow the road from Mürren to Gimmelwald until Pension Gimmelwald.
From there, a well-kept path continues in direction of Sefinental, along the Sefinen river to Stechelberg.

Perhaps Jane is trying to set some kind of record. I’m amazed people keep answering and the thread keeps going....

For a bad weather day, lake Brienz and Bellenberg Swiss open air museum should be better combination, it would free one day off on the way to Lucence, give it a chance for Brienzer Rothorn on that day.
It might not be perfect for Ballenberg, but will have plenty time to explore it.

One day for Bern.

Another bad weather day solution for Junfrau area:

From Murren taking Allmendhubel fundular up, hike North Face Trail, from Allmendhubel to Murren. Explore Murren, go down to Gimmelwald - Stechelberg - Lauterbrunnen by cable car or walking.

The North Face Trail is an easy one

Why is hiking a good solution for bad day weather in the area. Hiking in cloudy weather can be fine but if it's raining not so hot.

Another option for outstanding good weather outing - the Three Passes Postal Bus Excursions - just by regular buses that climb up and over three rugged passes in one day and bring you back to Meiringen where they start and which is a short train ride from Interlaken.

Bad weather day - take boat to Meiringen (or train) and take the old funicular up Reichenbach Falls - a roaring cascade - again where the mythical Sherlock Holmes tangled with arch enemy Prof Moriarity, presumably to his death. You can stand on the same belvedere that in the book and movie that fight to the death took place. Then go to Glacier Gorge - fine in bad weather and or to Ballenberg as you have planned.

Yes indeed, need plan for bad weather day even with rain, boat or train to Meiringen (from interlaken?) then Reichenbach fall, and Sherlock Holmes museum are good choices, how about Aar Gorge? could that be included? it seems close to the fall.

Three passes (Grimsel, Furka, and Susten) sounds wonderful, not sure when will this bus tour available ? it seems to be covered by Swiss travel pass. Only for perfect weather.

Thanks for your suggestions.

"For June 15 you can store your luggage at Interlaken Ost. Then you will return to Interlaken from Wilderswil (after Schynige Platte). to pick up your luggage. It is only a few minutes train ride. You need to pick a train time from Montreux to Grindelwald NOW so you can see if there is time to visit Schynige Platte on June 15."

If this day were not good for Schynige Platte due to weather on the way from Montreux to Grindlelwald, would taking a boat trip on lake thun and stopping over at thun be a good option?

Thank you

Yes. Boat trip on Lake Thun should work. Take the boat in one direction and train in other direction. I would guess that train to Thun with boat return may work best. Check train and steamer time tables.

The Open Air museum at Ballenberg is the LAST place to go if it is raining. the houses are widely spaced out and you have to do a lot of walking in the open. A lake cruise is also not a good thing if it is raining. Views are limited and you can't sit outside on the deck to enjoy them. OK I suppose if you simply want to have lunch on the boat - that at least is under cover. Bern is ideal because of the arcaded streets, museums etc to see which are all indoors. Hiking can be dangerous when it is raining - stones get slippery and you can fall. If you are going to hike in the rain stick to level paths. The Trümmelbach falls are fine in the rain - rain changes nothing there since it is underground. And the Sports Centre at Grindelwald is a great place on a rainy day.

Oberhofen and its castle is a great place to get off Lake Thun boats as is Spiez - with the castle of your dreams looming high above the boat dock - and direct trains to Interlaken stations.

COULD YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE MORE ON THIS? we could add it to Brienz, Meiringen trip on a funky day.

Thank you "

I explained that in detail (with Aar Gorge) in one of the 317 posts above.

BAD WEATHER DESTINATIONS:
They have been mentined again and again in this forum:
Funky chocolate Club, Interlaken
Model railroad layout Heimwehfluh, Interlaken
St. Beatus Caves, Sundlauenen
Oberhofen Castle and museum
Wocher Panorama (the oldest cyclorama of the world), Thun
Art Museum, Thun
old ciy, city walls and city gates of Thun
Thun Castle
Medieval city of Berne with tons of museums....

....but often, you can just board a train to Visp, as the weather in the Rhone Valley is usually warmer and drier than in the rainy Interlaken area.

You should probably go back and study all the posts as yes many of your questions have been answered in above Fodors-Guinness record number of posts on one travel question!

And checking schedules I think now there is not a direct Grindelwald to Meiringen bus but one via Gr Scheidegg to Bussalp - I believe you can catch another bus from there to Meiringen and it is also a gorgeous walk Bussalp to Meiringen though that would take much of a day. Check schedules once there.

Thank you all for your responses and inputs, I really appreciate your time and effort in helping out @PalenQ, dugi_otok, Hambagahle, neckervd. Sometimes it's not easy to understand everything right away, need to read and do some more homework too. I agree with PalenQ, will study the previous posts and do some work on checking the details of activities and schedules of various transportation means, Will make itinerary or daily excursion more clearly.

Brienz- Brienzer Rothorn-AareGorge

The following are the posts regarding to this subject, there might be some ones I might have missed:

“June 11th: Lucerne - Schuepfheim - Soerenberg - Brienzer Rothorn - Brienz - Aar Gorge - Bruenig – Lucerne” - neckervd

" 22- Grindelwarld to Lucerne, Lucerne - Schuepfheim (train) - Soerenberry (bus) - Brienzer Rothorn - Brienz -Aar Gorge - Bruenig - Lucerne, then Lucerne to Zurich HB

Are you so in love with the Brunig railway that you want to ride the Lucerne - Brienz leg 3 times?
Even then, the whole thing (Grindelwald - Brienz - Meiringen - Brunig - Lucerne - Soerenberg - Brienzer Rothorn - Brienz - Meiringen - Aar gorge - Meiringen - Brunig - Lucerne - ZRH) wouldn't be possible in one single day. ” - neckerd

“Can Aar Gorge - Brienz be done in OB instead of Lucerne? Can do from either - train Lucerne to Merigen then another train to the Aare Gorge trail (in Innerkirchen) - Quicker from Interlaken but if in Wengen just as quick from Lucerne. Nice thing about from Wengen/Interlaken is you can take a boat on Lake Brienz to Brienz then train to Innerkirchen - boat ride is nice. ” - PalenQ

“There is a circular day trip that you can do from either Wengen or Grindelwald that would take you to Aare Gorge.
If you start from Wengen it would be :Wengen-Lauterbrunnen*-Grindelwald*-First by cableway (do the cliff walk)-walk to Grosse Scheidegg –Schwarzwaldalp**-Meiringen**(Aare Gorge)-Brienz*-Interlaken(by boat or train)-Wengen**train **bus
It looks complicated but it is not.
It is this trip modified:. https://www.grindelwaldbus.ch/en/hik...ters-roundtrip

“Reference Post #233 Day 12 (6/19)
Brienzer Rothern Bahn (BRB)- Aareschluct-Brienzersee Steamer Brienz to Interlaken.

This works better Aareschluct-BRB- Brienzersee Steamer Brienz to Interlaken.
Saves you one train ride. Aareschluct opens at 8:30 AM. Train Grindelwald to Meiringen takes 1hr17 min. Trains run every half hour. It is easy to Walk the gorge and get to Brienz for BRB departure at 11:45, or 12:58. You spend some time at Rothern Kulm. Depart Rothern Kulm at 14:28 or 15:28 to take the steamer at 15:32 or 16:02. BRB is in sync with the Steamer. Boat trip takes 1hr10min. Return to Grindelwald from Interlaken Ost on the BOB. Worst case you miss the last steamer and you take the train from Brienz to Interlaken (20 min). ” – dugi_otok

Brienz- Brienzer Rothorn-AareGorge

Brienz- Brienzer Rothorn-AareGorge is interesting destination, original route suggested by neckervd is perfect if starting from Lucerne, since the base changed to Grindelwald, so the route has to be modified.

Base on the above suggestions, I tried to make two different ititneray for this destination. One for rain day, one for a good weather as follows, for your reviews and comments:

For good weather:

The route is Grindelwald – Brienz – Breinzer Rothorn – Brienz – Aareschlucht west – Aare Gorge – Reichenbach Fall – Meiringen –Brienz- Brienz steam- interlaken- Grindelwald as follows

- Train Grindelwald to Brienz 8:19 – 9:21 (1 change, Interlaken ost)

- Brienz dp for Rothorn (Brienzrothorn Bahn) dp at 9:40 or 10:45 ar at Rothorn 10:35 or 11:43

- Spend two- three hours at Rothorn

- Rothorn Kulm dp for Brienz at 13:28 or 14: 28 ar Brienz at 14: 32 or 15:32

- Train Brienz to Aareschlucht west dr 15:25 or 15:54 (22 min, or 26 min) ar at Aareschlucht at 15:47 or 16:20

- Walk to and through Aare Gorge (plan for 50 min) (Are Gorge closes at 17: 30)

- Walk to Reichenbach falls, 20 min, may catch last funicular train at 17:15 or may not

- Walk back to Meiringen train station (20 min) Train to Brienz dp 17:51 or 18: 22 ar 18:02 or 18:33

- Brienz: take the boat cruise to Interlaken ost if there is one

- Interlaken to Grindelwald

Bad weather will follow
