We walked from Grindelwald to Meiringen via Reichenbach Falls but the Grindelwald bus does this route in summer too - beats the round-about train route at least one way and gorgeous scenery.

If there is no direct boat between Lausanne to Geneva, we may just take to train from Montreux, since it's day trip to Geneva, don't have much time to spend on travel. Is there any other boat we should take on Lake Geneva in Montreux?

If interlaken station has locker, we may use the 15th for Schynige Platte

For Coumayeur, that means we have to watch the time, not to miss the bus to come back to Chamonix.

So Transportation Museum is the # 1 to see.

Interlaken-Ost has lockers and Shyinge Platte station may too. Swiss Travel Pass get 1/2 off at fabulous Swiss Transports Museum.

A nice late-afternoon boat would go to Evian-les-Bains - swank spa and casino town and a bit of taste of France - route fully covered by Swiss Travel Pass. You could take a very short boat ride to Chateau Chillon - the really popular castle a few miles from Vevey - buses also go there and it's a lovely lakeside walk.

Thank you for all the detailed and thorough information on BO, it is a little overwhelming and I will need to work on them. I believe all those places mentioned are worth seeing, but with the time limit, I would choose the most significant ones to go/see, so will have breath time in between activities. First I would make a list of must see, then secondary ones. And combine one mountain and one lake or something else in one day, in that case, if there is raining or heavy cloud, we will at least have something to do below the mountain top.

For the June 15, from Montreux to Grindelwald, since there are lockers at Interlaken train station, could we store our bags at interlaken, and from there take train to Winderswill ? so we can see Schynege Platte earlier, as it is one of the priority.

Reference posts #241, #242 Good alternative route suggested by PalenQ. You will see additional scenery that you would not see otherwise. However, bus takes longer than train. Makes the day itinerary a little more difficult timewise..

So we can do Shyinge Platte in half day on route from Montreux to Grindelwald via interlaken, the Shyinge Platte doesn't seem to have lockers.

For June 15 you can store your luggage at Interlaken Ost. Then you will return to Interlaken from Wilderswil (after Schynige Platte). to pick up your luggage. It is only a few minutes train ride. You need to pick a train time from Montreux to Grindelwald NOW so you can see if there is time to visit Schynige Platte on June 15. Can you bucket your activities for us into Must see, Like to see, and see if there is time or something like that. Thanks.

Vevey is on the opposite side of the lake from Evian, and more to the east. The lake is very big. It is in fact the largest lake in Western Europe. I think you are wasting your time with Evian. Unless there is an exhibition you want to see at the Palais de la Lumière there is little to see in the town. And the restaurants there are VERY expensive. And not great either. If all you want to do is say you have been to France then take the loop cruise around the Haut Lac (far more scenic than the route of the shuttle boat between Lausanne-Ouchy and Evian anyway). Get off at St Gingolph (CH). cross the bridge over to St Gingolph (F). Have a coffee or a glass of wine and voilà! You have been to France. (You also need EUR in their bars, restaurants etc). Then walk back to Switzerland and get on the next boat.

To get to Lavaux - it is a huge area and you have to select one part of it. My recommendation is to take the local train from Montreux to Rivaz and go to the Vinorama there. It is an exhibition centre for the local wines. You can learn all about the terroir and what they think makes the wines so special (I don't think they are - but the area is lovely!) you can taste wines there. It is a far better place to go for tourists because if you go to a cave - winery - you are expected to buy wines if you taste them. And you can't, I think, cart bottles of wine around with you!

Thunersee and Brienzersee are equally beautiful, there is medieval town Thun at Thunersee, but Brienzer Rothern at Lake Brienz, I may pick Brienz vs Thun if I can only choose one. If we have time left we could squeeze in Thunnersee. The above suggested route looks good to me, it will be a long day but workable. This will fit in one day in BO, which can be light rain or cloudy day, it it? If we have this day set, then we just need to figure out for the rest three days. Will work on them.

First full day could be Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) plus Männlichen (Walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg). Do this day on the first sunny, clear day.

Second day could be Schilthorn plus Thunersee Steamer (Thun to Interlaken). There are two sailings that could work- Depart Thun 13:40 Arrive Interlaken 15:40. Or Depart Thun 15:49 Arrive Interlaken 17:49. Do this on the second sunny, clear day.

Third day could be First including Cliff walk and 3 hour round trip walk to/from Bachalpsee

Forth day Brienzer Rothern Bahn and Aare Gorge.
The travel day, BO to Lucerne you could stop at the Swiss Open Air Museum (Ballenberg )

Hiking in Jungfrau Region - Grutschalp to Murren

Our hiking route for June 27:

1. Train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen (about 20 minutes).

2. Cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp - the cable car is quick and there are wonderful views!

you start your hiking from there.

3. Hike from Grutschalp to Murren - we took the "mountain view" trail as it's more difficult than the lower, flatter trail to Murren. To take the Mountain View trail, follow the sign toward Pletschenalp, then Murren. It took about 2 hours (about 45 minutes longer than the lower trail?) and is mostly uphill with fantastic views of snow capped mountains, etc. in the distance. You walk through a bit of forest areas and fields, passed cows and old farm houses, with flowers abound. The last 20 minutes or so is downhill, but was fine for my knees. We really enjoyed this hike. I would not have enjoyed doing the hike in reverse order as it would have been mostly downhill.

4. Cable car from Murren to Stechelberg.

5. Walk from Stechelberg to Trummelbach Falls (about 20 minutes) - it's a flat walking path along the road with a river running parallel and mountains on either side. When you exit the cable car at Stechelberg, cross the river and turn right (you will see signs taking you to Trummelbach Falls, if you want to go there). The falls were nice to see since we were in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip just to see the falls. See the reviews for Trummelbach Falls for more info.

6. Bus from Trummelbach to Lauterbrunnen (about 10 minutes), or you can walk to Lauterbrunnen in about 45 minutes.

7. Train from Lauterbrunnen back to Wengen.

Total time was about six hours. About 45 minutes at the falls.

Junfraujoch, Schilthorn and Schynige Platte are on top of the list, but in case of really bad weather, need backup plan for each of these. Bern may be an option, also could take train to go to each villages for a day when going up to Junfraujoch or Schilhorn is impossible, as following:

1) interlaken ost to Schynige Platte (1 hour)
2) take the train down to wilderswill and another train to Lauterbrunnen, switch to cable car up Grustchalp (1:30 -2 hour), is
3) Grustchalp to Murren by train (15 min ) by walking (1:30 h),
4) Murren to Wengen, cable car down to Stechelberg. Take the bus back to Lauterbrunnen from there. Then take the train up to Wengen.(1 hour 20 min)
5),Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg by train (30 min).
6) KS to interlaken Ost, then change to Gridelwald (1 hour 20min)

Is this a good route? any suggestions?
