Swimming in Spain in May

Will we be able to swim in Costa del Sol and Costa Dorada area beaches in mid-May? or too cold? When does it warm up enough for swimming in the sea?

I visited in mid-June. While the temperature was warm, the water was still very cold!

It will be warm enough to lay on the beach, take walks, etc., but the water will be a bit cold.
My opinion is around mid August. It is warmish.
You will have a grand time though! Oh, just take a dip in the cold water once, you'll love it.

hi

I live in the med (Languedoc).
Current sea temp is about 14C , 57f, but may be warmer in shallow bays, or further south.

People (ok , one who looked a bit suspect !) were swimming here 2 weeks ago on a nice Saturday. The beaches were pretty busy, the air temp was 79f at the time.

You can see updated world sea temps here -

http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/sst/latest_sst.gif

peter

It may depend on the shallowness and underwater platform but I must say that in Spain ( this of course may change ) I have experienced ( for the same time of the year ) cooler waters ( a couple of celsius degrees lower ) at Algarve, Costa del Sol and Costa Brava and warmer waters at Costa Blanca, Costa de la Luz, Balearic Islands, Murcia coastal areas and eastern Almeria province. Anyway you will find it difficult to be able to swim in waters warmer than 19ºC in the warmest ones usually Costa de la Luz area even when air temperature might be more than adequate to bake under the sun.
