Swimming in Croatia
We plan to be in Korcula and Dubrovnik in late May. Will the water and air temperatures be warm enough for swimming? Should add that we are Americans who will NEVER swim in Maine because it's much too cold!

Well of course you can swim in May, currently we have about 20 degrees(Celcius) air temprature here, so by end may, water temprature should be above 20.
In Korcula, city Lumbarda, there is a great sandy beach.

I have visited three times in late May--the sea will be cold, but if it is warm and sunny out (which is very likely), then it is fine. I never swam near Dubrovnik, but on Korcula you can find fantastic beaches if you rent a car or scooter or are willing to walk a good bit from a bus stop. Pupnatska Luka is one.
If you are tender footed, plastic water shoes are a good idea for the pebble beaches (where the sea urchins are mostly cleared away). For the rocky shelf beaches, water shoes are a must.
I urge you to seek out the best, most secluded beach you can find for a wonderful day:

Last year a young Australian woman had a near fatal accident trying to jump off the rock at Buza. Locals have been swimming there for years, yes they know the rock formations and understand the tides. The sea at that point is very deep and currents are always tricky. I never recommend tourists to swim at Buza. Swimming on Lokrum is always the best choice and a lovely place to spend an sunny afternoon. The sea water temperature is nothing at all close to the tropical waters of the Caribbean or Hawaii, much colder here. Banje beach is a nice beach area located closest to the old town, just outside Ploce gate.
