Swimming in Barcelona
Just returned from a Paris and Barcelona trip.
I loved the fact that Barcelona has beach and mountains. Wondered, though, how the swimming is in the city itself. It was too cold when we were there, but wondered if the water is clean enough (what does that mean?), to consider Barcelona in warmer weather as far as beachy things.

Barcelona has a wide, sandy beach which is quite attractive. Since it is north of the harbour, water is clean. All European beaches are tested regularly.
Swimming is possible from May thru September.
The more attractive beaches are, however, farther north along the Costa Brava (Tossa de Mar is a good option).

Even a bit further up from Barcelona, you can go over to the French side and get both beaches and mountains. Take a look at this site-it's just a photo album for the French side of the Pyrenees, on the Med.
These beaches are as clean as the best in France.

Of course, I live there.

Traveler1959 - I heard that the Costa Brava is a bit overrun with big hotels. Is this true?
and - blackduff - You pictures are wonderful. Where extactly is this place? I'd like to find it on a map. How does one get there? (Say, from Barcelona) Need to know where I could fly into to get there. How far from the Pyrenees are you? (Lots of questions, I know.)

The photos are all taken around the Perpignan region. The coastal photos cover from the Spanish border up to Argeles Plage.
This is an unique part of the world. The mountains drop down to the sea. Of course these are the Pyrenees.
Some of the beach photos are from Argeles, with my dogs being the stars.
This area is an easy reach from Barcelona. The autoroute from Barcelona is 200 kilometers north. The Spanish/French border is where the most photos were taken. The barbeque photos are from the same place.
It's a great place to live.

Yes and no.
There are sections which are terrible indeed - Malgrat, Lloret, Estartit. But the section between Tossa and Cap de Begur is very beautiful. You have to pick a place there.

What time of year were these photos taken?
Can anyone give me a range of temperatures at different time of the year? I wouldn't want to go when it's in the 90's (farenheit). I like being near the ocean (or sea) but not broiling on the beach.

The photos cover the whole year. The winter is fairly temperate in this area.
Yesterday the morning temp was 1 degree Celcius (about 32 F)but this is cool for this time. I've had over 70 F at Christmas.
I have a rental apartment and I had people coming to swim, up to the last of September. Normally the hot weather finishes in the first week of September but the weather still stays very nice.
Across the mountain, towards Barcelona, it's a bit warmer. I would guess that Barcelona will be 5-10 degrees F warmer than my area.
