Sweet Venice Hotel tips?
 

I will spend a few days in Venice with my 13 year old daughter this summer and would love to find a modest, charming hotel - ideally breakfast in the garden, that kind of thing - but it doesn't need to be fancy. Any ideas would be welcome! Thank you.

Previous trips, I'd stayed in Venice proper but the last time I decided to try something different. Staying on Lido is a lovely way to visit Venice because you spend so much more time on the water, criss-crossing the Lagoon, seeing it for the watery world it was to the early painters You're much more likely to catch a glorious sunset over the Lagoon if you're crossing back to Lido in late afternoon: http://jmstudio.fotopic.net/p55784247.html

The ladies that run this place are wonderfull, welcoming and helpful
with information. If the weather is fine, they will serve you
breakfast in the garden. If you're tired of the crowds and hustle and
bustle of Venice in the evening, there are many good places to eat
nearby on Lido, and a long beach if you want to walk by the Adriatic.

I like the Hotel Flora which was linked in Zoecat's reply. It's quite charming, has a nice little courtyard area for breakfast and has an excellent location.
Price-wise it's probably moderate by Venice standards but I'm not sure of your range.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful replies. Does anyone else have an opinion about staying in Lido vs. Venice? Also we will be taking the train from Milan and may want to spend a few nights in another town. Any suggestions? is Lake Como too much hassle? Thanks!

I'll second Ellenem's hotel recommendation. We stayed there last year and it was lovely. Breakfast in the garden was a very relaxing way to start the day and it's only a hop, skip and a jump to a vaporetto stop.

annie, I don't know how many days you have allocated to Venice. I would stay in Venice which I think would appeal to your daughter too.

I've so far stayed in Venice for 3 separate weeks and am going back for a 4th week this summer. I still wouldn't want to stay out at the Lido - too much time on boats, more like any other seaside town in Italy and less like Venice proper, not convenient to pop back to your hotel during the daytime.

We stayed at Ca Bonvicini on our one trip to Venice. You would love it! It is booked for out days in June so we are booked at Al Ponte Mocenigo, which looks and sounds great.

We stayed at the Hotel Ai Do Mori two years ago, which is very near San Marco - it was good.

We stayed 3 nights at the Pensione Accademia in 2006 and loved it - breakfast every morning in their beautiful garden, and, located in Dorsoduro, close enough to wonderful places without being in the crowds of St. Mark's square.

We also stayed in the Dorsoduro area last September and liked it a lot. It was convenient, more residential, and quieter than some areas. We weren't crazy about our hotel there, though, so I won't recommend it.
