Sutanahmety Istanbul, good neighborhood?
My family and I intend to spend 17 days in Turkey next January. Is Sultanahmet a good neighborhood to stay? It seems to be close to major attractions. How are the 4 star hotels in Turkey? ANY SUGGESTION WILL BE VERY WELCOME!

In my mind Sultanahmet is the best possible location. Besides, while it was quite busy in the daytime, it was almost quiet in the evening. It was hard to believe that you are in city of 15 million people. Plus trams, busses and metro are easy to use.
It depends on a 4 star hotel. I have been in Turkey in many hotels from that category, and while some are just like 5 star hotels minus a night club, some older ones really have a star too much.
Why don't you find some special category hotel? They are not star rated, but they are in old atmospheric houses, often with just a handfull of rooms, and usually with charming rooms.

I would definitely recommend this area. It is so close to the major historic spots and easy to travel around. If you stay in the traditional tourist area with all the typical high end hotels you have missed Istanbul.Our family stayed at the Best Western near the Hippodrome several years back with pickup included at the airport(all European Best Westerns are really "local" privately owned hotels that subscribe to a certain level with the star ratings but are easily accessed from overseas for booking). We had a wonderful room with A/C,TV and nice bathroom,free internet in the lobby (which was great as my son was checking his acceptance status for college),great breakfasts included on the enclosed rooftop with the views of the Bosphorus River and the Blue Mosque.If you want to see locals with the historic sights and have access to great restaurants and a tram to the Grand Bazaar-this area is it!!!Have a wonderful time in Turkey. The sights and the people are something that every traveler should experience.
