Survey Says- Train or Drive from Innsbruck-Hall to Venice
Hi there
I am in Hall in Tirol right now, and we are headed to Venice next Friday. I am trying to figure out what would be better... to drive or take the train.
There are pluses and minuses to both. Gas is fairly expensive here, and the car we have does not get the best gas mileage. I just looked up the train fares and R-T for two people it is just shy of 200€... I am guessing we would spend close to that on gas, if not more. Plus, we would have to pay to park the car in one of the parking garages near Venice. Is this a hassle? I haven't a clue.
The train seems more relaxing to me, but like my boyfriend pointed out, if we're driving, we can make stops if we want, etc...
What are peoples' thoughts? Are there cities worth stopping in en route from Innsbruck to Venice? Or would it be better just get into Venice and spend our time there? We will only be in Venice for two days.
I'd love to hear your feedback.

I've been to Hall in Tyrol several times. Have distant relatives there. It's a cute and very old village, and beautiful in the snow.
If driving you'll also have to pay the autobahn fee in Austria. I think that you also have tunnel fees.
I would take the train. Good stop overs wouuld be Bolzano (aka Bozen because it is in German speaking Italy) and Verona.

Petrol costs: 44.54 EUR
Road tax cost: 7.60 EUR
I take it that you are planning to return the car in Austria.
Parking at Piazzale Romana in Venice is about 20E/day.

Thanks for the information. We are actually on a home exchange, so we have the couple's car. That said, yes, it does need to come back to Austria after our stay in Venice, as it's not a rental car.
They do have an annual card for the Brennerstraßer, so I think that would help alleviate some of the tolls.
It seems to me that the Michelin petrol estimation is extremely low though. We picked up the car in München with a half-tank of gas, and had to fill-up just before the Austrian border for close to 80€. After a roundtrip to Salzburg today, the car is again on empty. So, in my estimation, it would take far more than 45€ to get us down to Venice. Perhaps Michelin was basing their results on a Smart

I'm a huge fan of the trains! To my mind, there's nothing so relaxing as enjoying a picnic lunch with cheese and wine and watching the scenery go by the window. If you like to watch people, you can do that too, inside your carriage.
If you need some "privacy," just plug in your iPod and stick your nose in a book.
No worries about gas, traffic accidents, getting lost, etc. Just relax the entire way.
No real need for a stop -- as you won't get as tired.

If you have a free car - and a couple of days free time - I would definitely drive. But then we do road trips whenever possible.
If you don;t have a couple of days to spend on the way - but are just going direct - I would take the train.

Another vote for the train.
There are definitely places worth seeing on the way with either form of transportation (I would add Trento to the list of easy stops like Bolzano and Verona) However with only 2 days in Venice I think you should go straight there.

In future: fuel is about 0.20E/L less in Austria.
With a large car, VM estimates 75E for fuel. It's about 400 km.

Thx everyone! I will share this info with my boyfriend... I think we are leaning towards the train at this point. I just don't want to deal with the hassles of driving, and would rather spend all of our time in Venice. We shall see how it goes!
