surfing the threads

Is there a way to hop back to the threads from a year ago or a season ago w/o clicking the 'previous' button again and again? Thank you.

novice Jan 19th, 2003 05:27 AM

"next 50", not "previous"

fiona Jan 19th, 2003 05:37 AM

are you searching for something for particular?

fiona Jan 19th, 2003 05:42 AM

and now I'm making mistakes! I meant "in particular".

Laurie Jan 19th, 2003 05:47 AM

If you're looking for info on something specific, you can do a search by typing in key words in the "text search" box toward the top of the screen. This will show (in theory) all threads mentioning that subject regardless of date with the more recent coming first.

novice Jan 19th, 2003 05:52 AM

But what if you are not surfing for something in particular -- curious to see what the interests were several seasons or even several years ago? Thanks again for trying to assist.

fiona Jan 19th, 2003 06:02 AM

I have wondered this myself but don't think there is any easy way. However I'm sure there are some experts out there who have the solution. Rex perhaps?

Laurie Jan 19th, 2003 06:04 AM

Try typing in a date from which you'd like to start in the text search. This should bring up threads that started that day I would imagine. May also include answers made that day?

novice Jan 19th, 2003 06:06 AM

nope, but thanks anyway.

David Jan 19th, 2003 06:25 AM

This is a bit clumsy but it works.<BR><BR>1.search for something with the search open.<BR>2.scroll down until you find a date you're interested in.<BR>3.right click on the particular message and look at the properties.<BR>4.get the “tid” for the message. (tid=title ID?) It's usually a 6 or 7 digit number.<BR>5.now paste the following URL into an Internet Explorer address box:<BR><BR>www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&amp;tid=9999999<BR><BR>6.Subs titute the “tid” number you've copied for the “9999999” in the URL above. When you press “enter” it brings up that message.<BR>7. Now, finally, go to the Explorer Address window and manually subtract 1 from the “tid” you copied and press enter again. Each time you do that it will go back 1 message.<BR><BR>I know, it is clumsy, but hopefully someone else will have a better answer.

novice Jan 19th, 2003 06:56 AM

David, this is a joke, right? signed, novice.

umm Jan 19th, 2003 08:52 AM

Well novice, have you a better suggestion? David's solution should work. To clarify his first command (if I understand his reason), if you FIRST do a search for something slightly obscure, then the first or second 50 messages should have something from a year or two back, to save clicking &quot;next 50&quot; so many times.

novice<BR>David took the time to help with your query. I think he deserves a better response than the one you gave!

HelpfulHarry Jan 19th, 2003 02:50 PM

Ok, I found an easier way (just pelase don't use it though to top a million old threads for no reason!) Just put in the text search box in the following format- 'Date: 01/19/1999' excluding the ''. Change the date as needed to what you are looking for.

CAgal Jan 19th, 2003 03:45 PM

Harry, this doesn't seem to work for me. Could you explain further or clarify?

novice Jan 20th, 2003 04:21 AM

Anon: ouch. This just proves that something one would say in person to a friend comes across as sassy when typed. No offense intended and thanks to all.<BR>novice.

Rex Jan 20th, 2003 07:22 AM

David's answer is essentially the right one.<BR><BR>As of today, the URL\<BR><BR>http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgTopics.jsp?fid=2&amp;start=39450<BR><BR>will take you back to January 20, 2002. Once you are there, you can still use next 50 and previous 50 in the usual way.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>
