Super Cover For Hertz

We are from US and am renting a Hertz car in Florence and I am seeking help to pick insurance. I looked at "Super Cover" and costs about 50e per day and it's more than double the car rental price! I appreciate your help.

Thanks

Your credit card most likely won't cover a rental in Italy so you would need to buy the insurance offered by the rental agency, or perhaps a comprehensive travel policy . . .

Rental cars are very expensive in Italy. This is why many travelers rent across tne border in France.

I'd look for insurance another way. Why not use www.autoeurope.com, I'm sure it depends on the car you are picking but they charge less than 10 euro a day for that in Florence from Hertz, at least for a compact. I suspect if you roll it into a travel insurance policy, it would also be lots cheaper. I do that if I'm renting a car when vacationing in Europe, the add-on to the travel insurance policy is primary coverage and isn't that much. For example, Allianz Classic travel policy will give you rental car collision/theft coverage for only about $72 add-on and it is primary coverage. And they cover Italy.

Cheers 2000,
Definitely try autoeurope. We are using them in Italy for an automatic pick up in Pisa return to Verona for 7 days. We got the all inclusive coverage with zero deductible, scratches covered etc for $397.
Hertz wanted $400 for same period, type of car but not all inclusive insurance. We have rented from them many times in Europe and never had a problem.
Good luck!

I agree- check rates/coverage at autoeurope.com. Or, kemwel.com- same company but sometimes better deals than autoeurope when in Italy.

Rental cars are very expensive in Italy. This is why many travelers rent across tne border in France.

But would it be honored if an accident occurred in Italy?

That's a good question Michael, althought I suspect it does. After all, if you own your car and live in France, I can't imagine your car insurance wouldn't cover an accident you had if you drove across the border for lunch one day.

However, checking autoeurope, it doesn't save any money anyway on the supercover to rent in France, it appears. Besides, you'd have to go to France.

CDW (collision damage waiver) and theft protection coverage are mandatory with Italian car rentals. Credit card coverage often excludes Italy. To cover the gaps left in the mandatory insurance, we typically purchase a rider with our regular travel insurance. It's usually a pretty reasonable amount, far less than what the OP has been quoted per day.

I've only had reason to rent twice in Italy (once in Tuscany and once in Umbria). Both times were through Autoeurope. I haven't found the rentals to be particularly expensive. They've been cheaper than some of our Stateside rentals--even after factoring in the insurance rider. Rentals through Autoeurope include some additional insurance as well. Here's info from their page on Italy:

Car rental insurance in Italy varies widely, so please review the information below prior to making your reservation. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.

All our car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. In Italy, all our rates also provide collision and theft coverage. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible as low as zero.

The following guidelines apply to rentals commencing in Italy.

Required Coverage
In Italy Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are mandatory. CDW reduces the deductible (responsibility of the client) to US$125-US$1180. Theft protection reduces the deductible to US$305-US$1180. Third party liability insurance covers a maximum of US$2,000,000 in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car. Fire insurance is also included in our rates.

Optional Coverage
Personal Effects Protection insures select items if stolen from the rental car. This coverage is available with some suppliers at a rate of approximately US$7 per day. Personal Accident Insurance, when not included in our rates, is available at the rental counter for approximately US$10 per day.

True, which is why you can take a leased car to Italy with no problem. But I am not sure that insurance on rental cars operates the same way.

Buy a car insurance policy especially for rental cars? They are crazy cheap.
