Sunday Lunch near Whitechapel?

Four of us are planning to do a London Walk with Donald -- "The Unknown East End" at 2:00 on a Sunday. It starts at Whitechapel tube station. Anyone know of a neat little place to have lunch first near there. I understand Brick Lane has become quite popular. Isn't that within close walking distance? Things open there on Sunday?

There won't be a lot in the immediate vicinity of Whitechapel Underground station, but the area (about half a mile west) between Brick Lane and Liverpool Street is buzzing on Sunday, as there are markets in Brick Lane, Wentworth St/Middlesex St ('Petticoat Lane') and Spitalfields. Brick Lane and Petticoat Lane markets are not much to write home about for most tourists, but Brick Lane has plenty of Bangladeshi restaurants as well as arty café-bars. Spitalfields has a range of 'international' food stalls if you don't mind grazing in the middle of crowds, but there are also plenty of pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes.

If your feet will stand it, go there well before lunchtime and look around - once you're in the area, you may well find you're spending so much time choosing where and what to eat that getting that last half mile back to Whitechapel Station may be a bit of a rush.

You'll really enjoy the walk with Donald -- we just did his "Jack the Ripper" walk last Friday, and despite there being a ton of people and his having a bit of a cold, he still was fantastic. He mentioned in his wrap-up that he had started doing the East End walks, and it sounded really interesting.

Try Dickens Inn at St. Katherine's Dock, Tower Hill. Great food.

Why'nt you have one of the lovely ladies come by Mitre Square about Three in the morning to see Saucy Jack. Ah'm not a Yid nor a Swedish sailor; I'm yours truly, Jack the Ripper.
