Sunday in Provence

We will be in Marseilles for 1 day (Sunday) when our ship is in port. We would love to visit Aix for the day, but we are concerned that everything will be closed. What are some good suggestions for a Sunday in Provence?

Bringing your post back up "to the top" (gives it renewed "visibility" since you have no answers yet) and because you are new here - - how do I know that? Click on your own name. This is a valuable tip that Fodors fails to give you when they send you that initial e-mail confirming your registration.

Best wishes,

Rex

Scour the internet to see if there are any festivals going on in the area that day. We went to a bullfighting festival in Nimes on a Sunday and the town was packed and there was all this food and sangria everywhere and we had a great time.

So what if everything is closed, walking the main Blvd with all those moss covered famous fountains is a treat and the also famous cafe will be open.

Oh, and I think the antiques market in L'Isle Sur La Sorgue is Sunday morning if that is your sort of thing.

Sorry, a senior moment , not mentioning the name of the legendary café/brasserie, "Les Deux Garcons."

You can have a fine time in Aix on a Sunday. There will be good restaurants open, as for French families Sunday lunch out is customary. But don't overlook Marseille--there's much to see in that white city, not the least of which is the view from the cathedral hill.

Thanks everyone! I was just wondering if we are better off skipping Aix and going to Cassis instead. By the way, where is Isle sur la sorgue in relation to Marseilles?

It is just east of Avignon. Maybe that is too far for you to go?

I would not opt for Isle sur la Sorgue as it is a bit far from Marseilles for a little day trip. While Aix is very beautiful, so is Cassis, and closer to Marseilles--we love Cassis, so charming, pretty harbor, lively on the w/e and you can enjoy a boat trip of the calanques (the limestone cliffs)--there is a 45 minute one which is great on a pretty day.

Take care,
Robyn France

Is it possible to do both Aix and Cassis in 1 day? Does anyone have any suggestions as to reliable drivers that could help make this possible?
