Lavandula,

Thanks again.

This is just the information I was looking for.
I was thinking of plotting the towns just as you wrote the same.

Worms
Unless my wife makes a last minute decision to come, I'll leave for Worms early while she's still asleep and be back before noon for us to start the day going east from near Rudesheim.

And as you wrote, we always have a bit of Frankfurt late in the afternoon or maybe into the evening for dinner.

I haven't as yet checked out that railway link you left. I wonder if starting in Mainz would be included.

I imagine Wiesbaden will fit in after returning from Koblenz which may not go too deeply into the afternoon. We'll see.

I'll have to report back on all this.

Thanks again. You've been a very big help!!!

Churches are open I think on Sunday even though the faithful I hear are in serious decline. Worms was nice but I though Speyer with its riverside castle even better.

Railway information you can get from www.bahn.de - just type in your destinations and you will get what you need, wherever you start from. There is an English option. The page I gave you about the Rheingaulinie doesn't have information starting from Mainz as that line (or lines) is exclusively on the right bank of the Rhine. You will probably have to change trains in Wiesbaden; Mainz to Wiesbaden by train is a short hop. Don't be confused by Mainz-Kastel; it is historically a little part of Mainz that was on the north bank of the river and I think it now belongs to Wiesbaden. Industrial, not worth visiting.

And now for the Sunday train ticket.

I went to bahn.de and put in a bunch of trips. I started with Mainz to Rudesheim and decided on each place depending upon the amount of hassle such as do we have to rent a hot air balloon to get to a site. Actually just joking about that but you get the idea. Amount of time on the train was also a consideration. I also was rather ruthless as I had a lot of places to select from.

I ended up with:
Mainz to Eltville
Eltville to Wiesbaden-Biebrich and maybe on to Wiesbaden for a Sunday stroll. The reason we might go to Wiesbaden on Sunday is that we will have been in Mainz on Friday and now Wiesbaden so my wife would be able to decide which she'd like to go back to on Tuesday on the way back from Koblenz. Actually, depending upon what time we leave Koblenz we may get to both that day. But still giving her a choice if we don't get back to both.
Wiesbaden or Wiesbaden-Biebrich (depending whether we go to Wiesbaden) to Frankfurt. Possibly stay there for dinner.
Frankfurt to Mainz to end the day.

The interesting thing is that every one of the fares came up as RMV fare. I also looked at the RMV Regionaler Schienennetzplan and all of the above rides also appear on the route map.
Can I assume they can all be done on a group day ticket?

I then tried to find out a little more, the price and where to buy it, the name of it, etc and ended up going in circles. For us the best place would be to buy it at the Mainz station.

Any answers to the above questions about buying the ticket?
Mainz to Worms is an RNN fare so can I assume it would not be included in and RMV day ticket?

Hi again Myer, the link here gives the area which the Rheinland-Pfalz ticket covers, which includes Worms and the towns along the Rhine valley

Attachment 2659

and this one has some info in English about the ticket itself:

https://www.vrminfo.de/en/tickets/ti...-pfalz-ticket/

I think you can buy your ticket to Worms from an RMV ticket machine in Mainz, or from a ticket window if you prefer, just down at the station. There is an S-Bahn (local commuter train) and regional trains (heavy but slow rail) to Worms from Mainz. The ticket covers trains and buses so I would think you would be fully covered by the ticket to go on S-Bahns as well as RB / RE trains. RMV is Rhein-Main Verkehr which covers local transport in the area Wiesbaden - Mainz - Frankfurt - Darmstadt and I think even up to Marburg, but you are right, Worms is in a different zone but I don't think that matters if you get the R-P ticket. The group day ticket will cover Worms as well.

I also wanted to show you a link I found on the castle in Biebrich, just so you know it's a walk around the outside deal, as there are offices and function rooms inside (full disclosure!):

You can visit the grounds and the café; unusually there are parrots in the grounds there. They are not native to Germany but came from a pair that escaped!

Are you going to see the Jewish cemetery in Worms? It was very interesting and you will realize Leonard Nimoy visited. They were excavating the main church last visit. We stayed a couple of hours there and went on the Speyer for the night.
