Sunday afternoon tea in London

We will arrive on a Sunday in December and would like to enjoy a "spot of tea". Palm Court is too expensive. Any ideas?

Thanks bunches!
Sunny

This has been thrashed to death over the last few months. Put "afternoon tea" in the search box at the top.

See this thread: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...noon-tea-5.cfm

And if it is not in there we also enjoyed tea in the cafe downstairs at Selfridges department store on Oxford Street or at Liberty department store near Regent Street.

Hi Sun -

I got food poisoning from my afternoon tea at Brown's Hotel, so definately avoid going there for tea. I wish I had gone to Claridge's instead. Their website says that they have a harpist during tea.

Busy, but good value: Wolseley

My sister and I had afternoon tea at Harrods. It was wonderful. We opted for the Champagne tea. They bring a whole bottle of Champagne then tea and finger sandwiches. We sat in a solarium room on the top floor which let a lot of light in and they has music. It was a really nice experience.

If you don't mind the Underground ride to Kew try Maids of Honour

It's a cozy tearoom that would be perfect on a December day and not as expensive as a posh hotel tea. It's a shame their website doesn't provide better photos of the shop and tearoom.
Try flickr or google images and you should be able to find a few photos.

If we are going off the beaten track then you can pretend to be intellectual as well and try afternoon tea in the British Museum in the Court Restaurant upper level, in the Great Court. There are 3 options English Traditional, Champagne, and Viennese, or just tea and cookies for those with no appetite.

Recommended by the cognoscenti:

The Fan Museum in Greenwich.
http://www.fan-museum.org/information.asp

Per their website: Tuesdays and Sundays: Afternoon teas served in the Orangery from 3pm. £4.50 or £3.50. (Plus admission.)

But call fan museum first to make sure if considering, per local's tip.
