summer walking shoes

Going to France & Italy this summer (only time I can get off from work)- any recommendations for good walking shoes (city walking and hiking) that are ok for 90 degree heat?

Wouldn't be without my Trek sandals- not very elegant but never get blisters or sore feet

thanks for reply - sneakers would smell!

I always wear my SAS sandals.. They are handmade in San Antonio...Great shoes for walking and sightseeing.they cost around 85 to 95 dollars... But if you have a foot problem is worth every penny...

If there are pebbles, I wouldn't go hiking in sandals. I'll tell you what I tell my pre-teen age son, sneakers only smell if you don't wear socks or don't change them with enough frequency. They can be great for hiking and walking. But you knew that, right?

I am a personal fan of Clarks sandals, for both walking comfort and some style in cities. They are OK for hiking as well, although the gravel/pebble comment from a previous poster is valid.

You should also check out the "other topics" forum which has a very long post about good walking shoes near the top with 38 responses - seems very useful.

I was really surprised by how comfortable my Birkenstocks were on all of the cobblestones in Prague. My feet didn't even ache or hurt by the end of the day.

I like Clark's sandals and really love my Naot sandals. (good ankle support)

I can walk forever in my Ecco Delight sandals and my best friend walked all over Europe in her Merrell Jungle Mocs. But there are many good walking shoes out there and no one shoe type is best. I think you need to find a store in your area that sells Eccos, Merrells, Borns, Clarks, etc., to see what works best for you.

And while I find my SAS shoes to be great for work, they just don't cut it when I'm on my feet for long stretches of time.

I second the Ecco sandles. This summer will be my fourth year in the same pair and they're almost as good as new (I do have a brand new pair for vacation though). After sightseeing all day my feet and legs still feel fresh.

adrienne
