travelgirl - We did the Canal du Midi on a self drive boat in early August of last year.

What do you want to know?

It was a GREAT trip - we will do it again - in fact, we are considering buying a boat and leaving over there so we can go back each year.

tigerman - do you think Canal du Midi is "the" place to go barging in France?

We've booked a barge in Brittany, due to our logistics. But, I've always thought that Canal du Midi would be great.

Where would you leave a boat? How often/long do you think you'd have to use it to make this feasible. I'm envious!

Yes, for us it was. We have a 12 year old boy who we considered when we made this trip. Canal du Midi has Carcasonne- and medieval walled city still intact and inhabited-along its waterway. Needless to say, that was the highlight of his trip - that and riding the rental bike along the tow path-now bike path- while I piloted the boat.

Email me at [email protected] if you want more info - I have lots.
