Ok, seasoned travellers - suggestions for economical trips for summer ( June 20 ish departure). I've gotten votes for Turkey, Portugal & Czech Republic, Went to ireland last year & loved it. Thanks!

All 3 places are great. What you choose really depends on your interests and what YOU want to get out of your trip. Maybe if you give a wee bit more info, we could help a bit more. <BR>

My young, adventurous, travelling grandmother went to Turkey recently (before the quake) and has been urging us to go ever since--she says it is great value for your money.

At the moment, I would choose Turkey. A friend just got back (he was there during the earthquake too, but not where it hit) and had an amazing time. He reports that ever since the earthquake, Turkey has apparently suffered a dramatic dropoff in tourism, despite the fact that no major sights or tourist areas suffered damage. As a consequence, there are no crowds and things are even less expensive as hotels lower prices competitively to attract tourists back. There was recently an article on the Frommer's website about this as well, noting that Turkey needs tourist dollars now more than ever due to the expensive rebuilding that needs to be done in some areas. My friend also reports increased goodwill toward foreigners in Turkey as international relief efforts have been much appreciated. Low cost + no crowds + friendly locals = Turkey.

What about Spain and/or Portugal. Beautiful scenery, cities, coasts and exchange rates.

If you're only staying 1 week/10days it's probably a toss up (unless you've particular interests. If you're staying 2 weeks or more I would definitively vote for Turkey: best/cheapest transportation system (bus/dolmus), much more diversity (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, etc), cheaper - $30/day more than enough for lodging and food - friendly people, etc ... and excellent value for the money even if airfare turns out expensive. <BR>Paulo <BR> <BR>

I vote for Portugal! <BR>Extremelly friendly peolple, mild hot climate, rich history, beautiful beaches,world heritage monuments and places, unforgettable tasty food at cheap prices, best wines, night life untill 7h00 am, etc etc <BR>I work at National tourism board, feel free to mail me if you need any information, if you decide PORTUGAL!
