Suggestions needed for trip starting July 20th, next week!
 

I have a last minute 10 day vacation starting July 20th and need ideas for a place to base myself for a week in Europe. I like cooler temps max of 80F/28C, I will have no car. I want to go for long walks in the countryside. I can fly into Paris, Rome,Venice,Frankfurt, Madrid Barcelona Glasgow. I am adventurous and don't mind taking public transport. Budget $100/day for food and lodgings. considering Austrian or Italian alps but can't find much information. Thank you in advance.

Try the Carnic or Julian Alps, which you can access from Venice, perhaps most simply by train via Udine and points north of there (Tarvisio). The area tends to be much cheaper than the rest of the Italian Alps. But you might need to do a fair amount lot of Googling to nail down the bus options that would bring you closest to trailheads, etc., plus lodging options if you don't have a car. ( I've only been in the region with a car.)

I would fly to Glasgow and head for Scotland - very likely to be cool enough for you - when many places won't.

I think Scotland fits the bill. I am currently in France in Bordeaux and although it has been unseasonably cool, the weather service says that will change.

Another thought is to get to Dublin since they are on the Euro and not the English pound, so it wouldn't be so expensive. COuld you fly in there as well?

I want to recommend Scotland but $100/day for lodging and food will be tight.

You could fly into FRA then take the train North to the Baltic Coast, maybe even venture into Poland. $100/day in Poland would be very doable.

It's been a cool summer here in Germany, but it is the high season so $100/day would be tight.

Thanks everyone for your responses. All sound great, but I've never been to Poland and being cheaper it might fit the bill better. I've been to Dublin and Galway plus some of the surrounding area. Re:Scotland I may head there for a quick trip next month to coincide with Edinburgh festival. And yes, it might not fit the budget. Spark chaser, any tips on Poland? I will start googling later this morning when I am freer. I loved Slovenia when my husband and I drove there for 2 weeks. He's not free and hates walking holidays, hence my decision to do a slow trav trip with long walks by myself. Thanks again.

And Sandralist, I will research those alps too. I love Italy but haven't been to that area before.

Another place in Italy with milder summer temps that you could access from Rome airport is Pescasseroli in Abruzzo. I believe it is reachable by public transportation from Rome, and because it is a ski resort, you might find cheap summer accommodations during the week in July. But I've only heard nice reports of it. No personal experience.

Ditto the town of Pescosolido, which I think is even closer to Rome and has a bus connection. Italy is having a pretty mild summer, with temps dropping fairly low in the evenings. Might change next week, but might not. But nobody is predicting scorchers for Lazio or the northeeast corner. Might be worth the minor risk.

Thank you Sandralist. I have written to a farm from the airbnb website. I really love Italy but stopped visiting as much after they converted to euro and France became cheaper to visit, but I think I will always love it most, of all the European/UK countries/culture. To be far I haven't been to most of Eastern Europe.
