Suggestions for Venice veterans.
 

My wife and I will be in Venice at the end of October. We have been to Venice several time in the last couple of years but are always looking for something new to see. Any ideas for "off the beaten path/less touristy" places to wander or see (if there is such a thing in Venice)?

birddog: have you read Sally Vickers' Miss Garnet's Angel? We had a lot of fun seeking out some of the sites from the book, especially San Angelo Raffielo, the statue of Tobiollo and in Cannaregio, the "camel house."

Will you be in Venice for the Biennale? We are leaving in 10 days, and that is something we are both looking forward to.

Also, on our last trip, we bought the Chorus Pass, and went to see churches we normally wouldn't have sought out. It was a good deal.

We will be there 10/27-10/31. We have not read Sally Vickers but have read most of Donna Leon's Guidetti novels and plan to be reading one while we are there. I will look into Vickers though.

Hi Tuscan, I am sure you will but do pack for "in case of rain". I had a long talk with a friend Thursday night (Friday morning in Italy). She lives about one hour north of Venice and was leaving at noon to go to Venice. Rain, rain and rain.

I am stopping in Philadelphia first, so I'm hoping that the rain will have slowed down by the time we get to Venice on 10/11. Just in case, I have a rain jacket, a rain hat, same for DH, and our travel umbrellas.

We are doing Philadelphia > Venice > NYC > home, and I figure we'll be moving so much that the rain won't be able to catch us!

birddog: Miss Garnet's Angel is a rather fluffy name for a book that, with a few exceptions in parts, is rather non-fluffy reading. There is a bit of a little mystery, but in general, this is an introspective tale of old age, with a lot of Biblical references.

I got the rec here on Fodors, and enjoyed the book. It makes wonderful use of its Venetian setting, taking the reader to the most visited places, as well as leading folks like me, who would probably not have ventured here or there, to unexpected small wonders.
