Suggestions for travel between Nerja and Alicate/Alcoy?

I really want to see the Moros and Cristianos festival in Alcoy, and I've been trying to figure out how to do it. By car, it's over 5 hours, by bus it's even worse. I may just be forced to take a plane from Málaga to Alicante, via Madrid or even Barcelona.

Any suggestions?

It's over 300 miles (500 km). There is no high-sped rail link. 5-hour driving is about right. You can fly but it will take as much in getting to the airport, checking in, security and waiting for connection etc.
I would drive and stay the night.

The idea of trying to drive for five hours intimidates me. I usually limit my driving time to 3 hours. But driving would be simpler.

I've finally decided to drive. I'm a little nervous about that long a drive, but I can't see another reasonable way to get there.

Take the Alsa bus or find another Moors and Christians event. They are all over.

I won't be in Spain for the others. This one is the first weekend after Semana Santa in Málaga, when I will be attending language school in Nerja.

The bus is not a bad idea, but I think the trip takes seven hours. I'll check again, though. Seven hours as a passenger will probably be more comfortable than five hours driving.

I've got plenty of time to make up my mind.

I too would drive. You can stop when you like, traffic level on part-toll motorway is pretty light/reasonable, and traffic moves fast (75 mph limit).

Just a tip for your stay in lovely Nerja. Do a day-trip to tiny Maro (pop. 800), just a 5-10 min ride along the coast and close to the famous Nerja Caves. Maro is as tranquile as it gets, yet you find a few nice tapas bars and restaurants here. Have been very comfortable sitting outside in the restaurant on the main Plaza de las Maravillas on several occasions.

The Playa de Maro was voted #2 beach in Spain and #1 in Andalucía in 2014: http://www.spain-holiday.com/Maro/ar...-de-maro-nerja

Thanks, Kimhe. I'll visit it on a weekend.
