Suggestions for tournig outside of Aix
Will be in Aix-en Provence in France for 4 days in June. Would like suggestions for places to tour in the area. We were in St.Remy/Les Baux last year. Are there suggestions south and east of Aix that people could suggest. We visited many of the hill towns last year. We would like to find new areas to explore.
Is 4 days too much time in Aix?

I think that 4 days in Aix is probably 2 too many! When in Provence, I really like the smaller towns (Maussane les Alpilles, Nyons, Isle sur la Sorgue, Beaumes de Venise, etc.) rather than the cities. We try to hit the towns according to their market schedules.

If you do drive up to Lourmarin, consider stopping at the Abbaye de Silvacane just south of Cadenet. Bit of a boring drive up from Aix-en-Provence, but the abbey is a very good example of Cistercian architecture.

We took a leisurely drive up Mt. Ste. Victoire east of Aix to see where Cezanne painted many of his pictures. There was a quaint, inexpensive restaurant along the way (in Vauvenargues)that served delicious middle eastern food - with a view of the mountain and overlooking a Chateau where Picasso spent the last years of life and where he is buried in the garden. The chateau was not open to the public where we were there. This drive was a wondeful way to unwind after several non stop days of trying to cram in all of the sights.
I also second PBProvence's recommendation to go to Cassis - a delightful seaport town with lots of restaurant choices overlooking the harbour. As she said, a boat trip along the calanques is a must do. You can pick the length of time of your tour depending on the time you have to spare. We got a taste of the area with a 1 1/2 boat tour.
