Suggestions for Rome hotel: best location for 4 nights Aug/Sept

At the end of Aug, 3 of us (parents,24 yr old son) will begin our trip in Rome. We will be there for 4 nights, then on to Florence for 3 nights, Venice for 3 and last night in Milan leaving from there. I assume we will use trains to travel to each city. We prefer 2 rooms, breakfast and nice but not super expensive. I've looked at Independent Hotel and hotel Diocleziano (where friend stayed) , both near train station, rooms over $200/night or about $400 which seem expensive. Convenient for first am and leaving. But would it be better to be based closer to other sights for our first visit? We enjoyed bed and breakfasts in the past. Thanks!

We stay at the Hotel Italia, which is near Santa Maria Maggiore. Close by are two excellent trattorias, Antica Boheme and Al Boschetto [open Sunday].

Purchase your train tickets on the Trenitalia web site, using italian names for the cities, up to 120 days in advance.

We were in Rome and Florence last October. In Rome we stayed at Hotel Albergo Cesari, which is located about halfway between the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, and a really good area to walk to many things. They have a beautiful rooftop terrace where you have complimentary breakfast or you can enjoy drinks there at night. The staff were great. In Florence we stayed at Il Guelfo Bianco - an excellent hotel: great location, great staff and really good included breakfasts. But don't forget, both these cities can be very expensive in peak season.

We have used both Hotel Sonya and Aberdeen, both three stars and in the Termini area which we actually prefer although some will rip on the area. It is on the edge of the main tourists attractions but we don't mind the extra walking and bus service from that area is very convenient.

Domus Borgognona hotel located
around the Spanish Steps & Trevi Fountain.
Terrific boutique hotel. Includes breakfast and the Red room has two bedrooms. Under $250 per night.

We have also stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen. Clean and comfortable with a great staff. We had a double room with breakfast last July for 100 euros per night.

Hi Trevorjoyce,
I just booked the Albergo Cesari for June and I'm excited to be staying there. The dealings so far with the hotel has been great. They respond within mins!
Of course I read the reviews on booking.com and tripadvisor. I also did a google walk around the area and it looks perfect for sightseeing.
Enjoy!
