Suggestions for Europe-themed books?

My best friend and I have had an agreement since we started university that once we finish our bachelor degrees, we will take a celebration trip to Europe together. This summer she will be writing her MCATs and she is obviously very stressed out, so as a birthday present to her, I want to put together a box of books/movies about Europe; fiction and non-fiction, so she has some reading material that is fun and gives her something to look forward to in the next year. So, does anyone have suggestions for fun reads and a good overall travel guide book on Europe? All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The first thing that came to mind was the movie L'Auberge Espangole (I think its US title is The Spanish Apartment). It's set in Barcelona and has actors from all over Europe. A really enjoyable film!

Vicki - search on the term "Kite Runner" and it will bring up a thread with tons of information. One of them entitled "Looking for a good book - what are you reading right now?" has over 800 posts alone.

(Kite Runner is one of the books that gets recommended here so searching on it brings up the related posts with tons of great recommendations.)

There are specific threads on books set in France and in Italy, as well as Europe generally--hundreds of responses on those are just waiting for you.

Check out any of Bill Bryson's travel books - he is a very funny and informative writer. "Neither Here nor There" and "Notes from a Small Island" are both great European travel books by him.
