Suggestions for drive from Florence to Rome
 

My husband and I will be visiting Italy next month and we would greatly appreciate it if anyone can provide suggestions for our drive from Florence to Rome. We have 5 days allocated and would like to know which places we should see and what would be good pit stops for the nights.

I can't help with your question, but can I make a suggestion that you finish the 5 days somewhere where you can drop off the car and then use public transport to make your way into Rome.

It sounds like a lovely trip, I'll be interested to see the ideas that are posted.

We did something similar in 2003. Places we stopped en-route were Siena, Montefascione on Lake Bolsena, Buonconvento and Anguilara Szabaio on Lake Braccione. En-route we tended to avoid major roads and wandered the back roads on the Tuscan countryside, looking at old towns, villages and castles as we encountered them. Basically it was a relaxed trip.

We didn't book hotels in advance. We started looking for somewhere as it got close to dinnertime or if we just liked a town or district.

I've been told since its peak season I might have trouble looking for last minute accommodations. You think I don't need to book in advance? This would give us greater flexibility to play it by ear - like you said stop at whatever place we fancy.

I can't say how difficult it may be to book this time as my trips were a few years ago. I would certainly book in advance in Florence and, if you stay there, Rome, but I think the places between may be easier to play by ear especially if you don't stay in major tourist cities but small towns like Montefasciano or Buonconvento.

Others may have better advice on current conditions.

Bus to Siena and spend a day there. Then, get the car and base in one location south of there for 3 nites. Finally, drop the car in Orvieto and spend the nite there, and train back to Rome the next day. I would have reservations at all of them.

Whats a must-see place for photography between Florence and Rome?

I would definitely spend a night in Montalcino, Pienza or another town in Val d'Orcia, which is a stunning area in southern Tuscany. The extraordinary landscapes are definitely photo-worthy and iconic. Plus the wine is amazing!!

Traffic violations are a MAJOR, M A J O R problem in Italy's big cities. Cameras capture you so in 6-8 months you'll get a hit on your cc from the rental car agency as they had to provide info to the municipality where the fine occured and then the municipality itself.

Get rid of the car on the farthest outskirts of Rome as you can and take public transport in or even a taxi is better than driving in.
