suggestions for cheap stay in Italy?
I will be traveling with a friend for a month in May after we finish our study abroad classes in Germany. We are "poor college students" but wanted to see Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice...) Has anyone stayed in a youth hostile or hotel there that they would like to recommend? Or does anyone have suggestions for other must-see cities and sites!? It would be helpful even if you could recommend a helpful URL. Thanx!

Hostel, Erin, not hostile, a different meaning altogether. Find a guide book, such as the Lonely Planet series, that is slanted toward younger people for hostel suggestions. The Rick Steves website (www.ricksteves.com) has a section on hostels.

Buon viaggio

Erin - also consider convents and monasteries. They are very inexpensive (we stayed in 2 different ones in October for $25/person), they are usually very centrally located, and they are run by the Nicest people!
Many now-a-days are set up dorm-style, but like a hotel you can leave your luggage in the room (unlike hostels). Both the places we stayed had showers/bathrooms in our room. I found both of the ones we stayed at in a book - there are several available. Get one that tells all: how many rooms available, prices, does anyone there speak English (if you need it), is there a curfew, and do they have linens (again, if you need it).
Have fun planning!

I just returned from a week in Rome and Florence. I stayed in a great pensione in Florence called Hotel Medici. It is a 2-star hotel. We had 4 in a room and paid about $25 a night for each of us. The hotel is very near the Duomo so you couldn't ask for a better location. Staff was friendly and courteous. Room was clean with a small bathroom. Breakfast of rolls and coffee also included. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

In Florence, I've stayed 2 times at Hotel Il Perseo, just a block from the Duomo and very near train Station. They offer rooms with or without a bath. It's a very clean hotel with breakfast included... not expensive.
You should try www.venere.com/it/firenze/perseo
BUON VIAGGIO!!
