suggestions for barcelona area

We will be in Barcelona at the beginning of June for 3 nights. We are looking for a hotel that is convenient for sightseeing, but not necessarily in the city centre, as most locations look quite expensive.
Can anybody suggest something not necessarily in the more popular areas, but still easily accessible to all the "important" Barcelona tourist attractions? We'd consider a small efficiency unit.

This hotel is in the city centre, but still quite a deal. It's the Hostal Palacios. It was beautiful, but basic and very reasonable for the size of the room and the private bathroom. They have a web site. It's very close to Placa Catalunya and I found out about it on Fodors, so try typing it in the search box. Good luck!

Don't really want to spend over $1000 (CAD) for three nights! That's what seems to come up with most of the hotels. We've never been to Barcelona before. We're ending our cruise in Barcelona and have decided to spend three nights in Barcelona so we can really enjoy the city. May never pass this way again!

$1000 CAD ia currently worth about €580 EUR, or about €193 EUR/night. You should be able to find decent accommodations in the beginning of June (the first two weeks) at the following hotels:

Hotel Inglaterra,(http://www.majestichotelgroup.com/)

AC Diplomatic or Barcelona (http://www.ac-hotels.com)

If you can afford the Diplomatic then you can DEFINITELY afford an Apsis property, too

Dear peggyb,
check this hotel

we've stayed there last April and it's in a GREAT location!

The room cost 100€/night and the suites 130€. (the rooms are quite small but we didn't mind as it had a nice decor and it was right in such a wonderful location

In march I haver stayed in Gran Hotel Torre Catalunya. This is a four star, high rise hotel next tot the Barcelona Sants station (direct connection by train tot the airport and connected by two metro-lines).

Very nice hotel, with large rooms. Very often discounted, because of the fact that it is mainly a business-hotel and in slow periods they still want to fille the rooms.
Also possible to get an upgrade to a (junior) suite for very little.

The area is safe, but not very exciting. But in about 10-15 minutes you are on the Ramblas or at the Sagrada Familia.

I stayed in apt which I rented through Loving Barcelona. It was in the El Borne area. The apt was good and the location fabulous (near the Santa Maria del Mar church) and a quick walk to the Jaime I metro. It was safe with a lot of street traffic (and I was staying alone). I dont think you can do much better for the price..and there was a fabulous cheese shop near by in case you needed any further motivation!

whoops the apt name was Calders.

We stayed at Hotel Constanza Oct/08. Great location. It was
at the high end of our budget but the hotel was really nice. It was $200.36 CDN a night. Easy walking distance to the Ramblas etc. I think it was recommended by Mirabel.
