Suggestions for B&B's in Garmisch?

Are there any nice B&B's near Garmisch or the surrounding towns for under 100 euros? We would like to stay in that area for two nights and use that as a base to see Ludwig's castles.

Also is it better to take a train from Munich to Garmisch (et surrounding towns) or to rent a car?

there are dozens if not hundreds of such places throughout Bavaria. I don't have one in Garmisch, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding something nice.

Forget the dozens, hundreds at least.

Although-there may be "hundreds" it would be nice to have a personal recommendation from someone who has been there. We are planning a trip that will encompass a stay in the Garmisch area, so it would be helpful to others also.

I stayed at the Hotel Roter Hahn down the street from the train station and a 5 minute walk to the main pedestrian only street on the Garmisch side. A double with balcony and view of the Alps and Zugpritz was 78 euros including breakfast. The owners were a couple who spend 20 years in Canada very friendly and knowledgable. In Garmisch the Alpenhof is an excellant restaurant goulash and a filet of beef cut at the table were well prepared. [email protected] tel. 49-08821-54065.

charmkins I booked in late July for a September visit. I rented a car at Frankfurt and drove the Romantic road to Garmisch overnighting in Rothenburg. The sights around Garmisch are easy drives you can combine many sights in one day with a car. We daytripped to Castle Neuschwanstein , Hohenschwangau and Wieskirche a church near Steingaden (don't let the pedestrian out side put you off) the inside is stunning. Oberammergau,Ettal and Linderhof are an easy day trip. Mittenwald and Innsbruck can easily be combined from Garmisch. A car will allow you to see more of the sights without trying to coordinate bus and train schedules. www.hotel-roter-hahn.com to view hotel. Have a great trip Jackson

There are frequent and cheap trains from Munich to Garmisch, all day. I really prefer Mittenwald though. It's smaller and IMO more picturesque. The trains to Garmisch continue on to Mittenwald.

Peep, I had heard that there could be some really heavy traffic in Mittenwald. Was this a problem when you were there?

I've never driven there, only taken the train, but it's such a small town I can't imagine what heavy traffic one might be referring to. We've walked all over town and never noticed any traffic problems.

If you want something other than German food when you get to Garmisch, there's a very good Italian restaurant on the road to Partenkirchen.
