Suggestions for arriving in Malta from Italy...

We plant to visit Malta after spending two or three days in the Amalfi Region of Southern Italy...Has anyone out there in cyberspace used this itenerary? How can you get there at reasonable costs? What about the ferry versus flying? I posted this topic a couple of months ago but it has disappeared! Also, we plant to journey on to Southern France from Malta and need to know the most economical way to arrive in either Barcelona, Spain or Niece, France...SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!

Cal, I would fly---look at the map, it
is a long way. Why are you jumping
around so--are you on a business trip.

A ferry might be cheaper, but you are talking DAYS on a boat, based on your itinerary (and probably a stopover or two). Flying is the only way you'll get to all those places in a reasonable amount of time.

You can get a ferry from Naples. I believe it takes about a day and a half. So if you have the time why not try it - should be a different experience. The Italian for ferry is traghetto (worth checking with an on-line directory) if you want to do a web search in Italian.

Steph

me and 5 other students took off on a whim for our spring break (studying in switzerland) to go to Malta for one week in april '99. we got there by taking the train from Naples down to Catania, Sicily. next to the train station there was a travel agent who booked our ferry ride for about $80-100 i think. it didn't stop there though, we had to take a pretty sketchy train down to Pozzallo to pick up the ferry but that was just b/c of the schedule at the time. from Pozzallo, the ferry trip was about 2 hours. for us, it was a long trip (by train from naples, anyway), but well worth it since it probably saved us a few hundred bucks. in short, if you're already in southern italy, it's probably worth it to just take the ferry. leaving malta, i would guess the best way to go is a flight unless you plan on going back thru italy.

Hi !
You're in luck as I happened to be reading this, and I am Maltese.
Your best bet is to take the Virtu Rapid ferry from Catania or Pozzallo. The journey is about 3 hours from Catania. But check the timetable as certain routes operate on certain days only. This is their website:
http://www.virtuferries.com/
Also, if travelling in winter, I recommend plane (AirMalta) from Catania or Palermo. There is little difference in price usually, and planes operate to schedule and the service is better. Ferry depends on weather. Also, there is no pasenger terminal in Catania .. you board through a container depot. However, it is a grand way to arrive in Malta, at the Grand Harbour.
To go on to France, you will need to take a plane to Marseille (that's AirMalta - www.airmalta.com). But the price will be very expensive outside winter since this will be a one-way fare. I suggest you skip France ... there is so much to see in Malta and its sister island Gozo (Ghawdex).
If you (or anyone else) wishes more information, I would be happy to oblige ... just email me !
