Suggestions for a european family vacation with children summer 2012
Our family of 5 will be traveling to Europe from NY summer 2012 for 1 month. Our plan is to visit Madrid, Barcelona, family in France (south) and then Rome. Can you recommend sleeping accommodations and suggestions for children 17, 15, 10 other than historical sightseeing. Maybe a beach, sports arena, show that should't be missed.

Where will you be in the South of France? If you are near Montpellier, I would recommend Sète which is a lovely small town bordered by beautiful sandy beaches on one side and canals on the other. Plenty of water sports, but also music festivals and water jousting and a gourmet walking tour. According to the Daily Telegraph UK "Sète is the most fascinating small town on the French Mediterranean coast" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/th...ect-break.html. Montpellier has also been rated in the top destinations to visit in 2012 by the New York Times. http://travel.nytimes.com/2012/01/08...&smid=fb-share.

Let the kids search for things they'd like to do. Chances are they will want to shop. You'll probably be spending some time on trains so have something for them to do--maybe a kindle?
We did this with our children at a fairly similar age and told them that we would do some things WE wanted to do (museums/cathedrals, etc) and we would do things THEY wanted. It wasn't long before there wasn't much difference in our sightseeing.
Is there a particular reason you are choosing Rome over Paris, for example?

Another idea for getting the children involved is to make them each responsible for planning a day of "touring". The internet is such a goldmine of information up to and including them telling the family group of the history of "X" and why it would be good to see it ETC.
