Is the drive from Gap to Annecy spectacular?

Is Route Napoleon worth the extra driving time for the views from Gap through Grenoble and Chambery? We would be driving in September and staying in Talloires for 6 nights so plan to do some mountain driving up Mt Blanc and plenty of other scenic drives/walks.

Michelin maps show us that the discovery route from Luberon to Annecy/Talloires is 8 hours via Route Napoleon so we would take 2 days for that drive.
The other choice is the more direct route from Luberon to Talloires (mostly motorways and around 4 hours) which would allow us an extra night in Luberon area.

We are thinking the more direct in one day would be better but am interested in how spectacular the drive from Gap to Annecy is?
