Suggestion for Pubs in Edinburgh
 

Traveling to Edinburgh in Sept. our first time in Scotland, anyone have ideas for favorite pubs to try? Thanks

If you're near the Wally Dug you should pop in for a pint. It's a small basement pub - very friendly - and it'll be easy to talk to some locals.

You're kidding, right? Edinburgh is the City of pubs. There must be HUNDREDS

Go onto Rose Street and just wander along; try the Oxford in Thistle Lane; Deacon Brodie's in the Mile; Sandy bell's and the Tron for Traditional music. The Café Royal, the Barony, Mathers, the Diggers (posh name the Athletic Arms), the Roseburn, Bert’s, and the Abbotsford.

As Sheila says there are pubs EVERYWHERE. If I lived there I'd probably have a fav local - but I have probably been to 25 different pubs in the city and only once in a while go to the same one a 2nd or 3rd time.

A stroll along Rose Street is a fabulous pub crawl. And the Deacon Brodie up on the Royal Mile is probably a must for a first time visitor.

Some others I've enjoyed are the Cafe Royal, Guildford Arms, and The Shore. But you will find good pubs on most street corners (and in the middle of the blocks too)

Our very favorite pub is the Bow Bar, 80 West Bow Street/Victoria Street off Grassmarket.

Another one we enjoyed was Cloisters.

When we went to Edinburgh, the only "guide" book we brought along was the "Edinburgh and Leith Pub Guide." We loved it. You can pick one up at Amazon.

I enjoyed the Guildford Arms on 1 West Register St. in New Town (George St area)on a recent visit. Great decor, good upscale pub grub and beers served with a temperature to match the style of the beer.

Cynkarl, didn't see this thread first time round, just now when it was referenced in another thread to which I had contributed. These were my suggestions there, some the same as other posters above :-

in the centre - Guildford Arms (biggest selection of varying guest ales), Cafe Royal, Oxford Bar, Bow Bar.

slightly out of centre - Cumberland Bar, Bennett's, Cloisters, Caley Sample Rooms, Golden Rule.

Leith - Port O'Leith.

In addition to the great places the other posters have recommended, may I add -
Logie Baird's, The Filling Station, The Royal McGregor and The World' End, all on the Royal Mile; Ryrie's near Haymarket train station (live music) and Sneaky Pete's which I think is on Victoria Street but I'm not positve because we went there with local friends on our first trip to Edinburgh in 1994 in a taxi, after spending time in another pub called the Haymarket Staion Bar which has changed owners since then and the last I heard it was called Calendar but it may have changed by now.

I was in the Cafe Royal last night & something very bizarre happened - they called 'last orders' at 10.45pm !?! I've never actually spent all evening there so don't know if it's normal at this time of year, but it's certainly not normal for Edinburgh ! Basically, in case you were wondering, you can find somewhere to drink round the clock if you're so inclined : the Penny Royal just round the corner opens at something like 5am, for instance :-) The most common closing times are midnight or 1am, although most close an hour earlier on Sundays. I think the only rule is they can't serve alcohol until 12.30pm on Sundays.

BTW we'd just been to a fantastic site-specific show at New Register House, tried the Guildford first but it had live folk music on :-)
