Suggestion for a good base between Cinque Terre and Lucca

Jump to last reply

My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy from April 24 - May 5. We plan on flying into Milan and then taking a taxi to Bellagio (got reservations for Hotel Florence!). We will stay there for 2 nights. We will then meet up with my brother-in-law who will be driving up from Rome (he lives there) . We were planning on staying in Cinque Terre, but the more I read on it, it seems like a better place for a day trip. My brother in law wants to visit Lucca. The rest of our trip we will be spending 3 nights in Tuscany and then drive to Rome.

Questions:
Could we stay in Lucca and day trip to Cinque Terre from there? Is there a recommended city or village between the 2 sites?
Where would be a good place for us to meet with my BIL? We could take a train (and ferry) somewhere from Bellagio. Originally we had planned on renting a car in Milan and driving to Bellagio, and then meeting BIL back in Milan while returning the rented car. We have since decided not to rent a car because it wouldn't get much use. Since we don't have to worry about returning a car, going back to Milan seems like a waste of time.

Thanks for any suggestions. Please ask me anything to clarify what I'm trying to explain.
