I can't help but chime in as I've been wearing out a French CD lately that you might like. It's Carla Bruni's "quelqu'un m'a dit." Now, I know she falls into that ex-model category that often spells dreck, but her album is quite lovely and mellow. (It's been a huge hit in France.)
Benjamin Biolay is also getting a lot of press---you may have seen the profile on him in the recent "New York Times" Sunday magazine, and his Web site has sound clips you can preview.
For jazz: Sydney Bechet. Bechet was an African-American musician who, for various reasons, ended up as a post-war star in France. It's sometimes difficult to find his albums in stores here, but you'll find dozens of CDs in France!
As for films, I'm sure people have plugged "Amelie" already... but among the classics you might try "Breathless" and "The 400 Blows" for a grittier but compelling look at Paris in the early 60s. If you need something even more anti-moonlight-and-romance, dip into the deep well of French film noir with terrific flicks like "Rififi" and "Le Samourai." Enjoy!
