sudden theft rise in Edinburg

The Scotsman is reporting that there has been a spike in pickpocket thefts in the city Centre and Wverly Station areas in the last couple of weeks. Several arrests have been made of what are described as 'foreign' pickpockets who are adept at unzipping bags and taking things which are not noticed as missing until later. Until they are rounded up or driven out, keep a close eye on your wallets, purses, cameras, bags, etc.

Yes, I have just heard this too! I was in Edinburgh a month ago and found it delightfully stress-free , as in I didn't feel 'on guard' like I do in Italy or Paris. But just last week I was talking to a friend who has lived in Edinburgh for 5 years, she reports that there has been practically an overnight invasion of what she referred to as 'gypsies' in the touristy areas. Very disappointing to hear, I hope they can get a handle on this influx.

The do-gooders are attempting to eliminate 'stereotyping'. Yet, every tourist knows that the 'Gypsy or Roma' profile persons hanging out in crowded public places are usually up to no good. No local children are badgering strangers. Begging and and pickpocketing are actually profitable occupations. They are tolerated by local authorities, who otherwise would have to support them. Sooner or later they outlive their economic usefulness and are removed. Read: Dickens and Orwell.

It's an allusion to another thread which you might not have followed (and which you might be better off not following, so don't worry about it).
