well, I live about 20 km from BiBi ... :-)
Munich for sure is nice, worth a daytrip, but about three hours driving one way.
Wine road in France is a must - take a little time in Strassburg and Baden-Baden on Your way.
Lake Constance - depends on what You are looking for. I like the area, there's so much to see. (Meersburg, Kloster Birnau, Island Reichenau which is an Unesco heritage, Zeppelin museum, Konstanz and may a sidetrip to Schaffhausen).
Italy - is about 6 hours to drive to the border. On weekends there is a lot of traffic and in summer You stuck in one jam after the other. Not my cup of tea to drive so far for so less time. Would prefer other places when driving so long: Paris, Nacy, Reims, Loire, Luxemburg, Cologne, Wuerzburg, Bamberg ...

Gargamel, thank you. You are a wealth of information. If we did the wine road where would you suggest we stay? Is this a 2 day trip or a 3 day trip? I am very intrigued by this idea. We both like wine a lot, too.

sorry, as I live nearby I never did this area in another way as a oneday trip. So don't know where to stay. Strasburg is not the hit. Nice to visit, but the hotels and BBs are expensive. Also Colmar. Guess it all depends on how fast You wanna go. My advise is to stay in one of the small villages - You will find accos everywhere without reservations (ex. in August). So You can visit a wine cellar or wine restaurant and "walk" back to Your hotel. Try the Flammkuchen!!! with a bottle of Muscadet.
Perhaps do the tour Wissembourg - Straßburg - Colmar - back to Germany - Kaiserstuhl - Baden-Baden (jacket, tie, no jeans, no sportshoes for the casino; and no swimming suites when visiting the Friedrichsbad) - Rastatt (castle) - back.

Hi Katherine!

My travel partner and I always pick up our Peugeot lease car in Strasbourg and so we have on occasion explored the area around there.

We stayed one time in Andlau, south-west of Strasbourg, and spent a happy week exploring the Wine Road and surrounding district between Dorlisheim, Selestat, Ste Marie aux Mines and Schirmeck la Broque. The prices for Ferienwohnungen seem to be very reasonable in that region, at least ours was. If you were interested I could get you the name of the place we stayed in - the landlady was charming, and I have memories of lovely breakfasts there.

I might be getting greedy here. It looks like we could do the wine road in one day? Could we go to Paris for my weekend trip? Or is that unreasonable?

Where I come from we think nothing of driving 1200 km. in one day, staying 2 days and coming home again.

After reading the replies to TO PATRICK I realize maybe I should not be addressing this directly to Gargamel. Forgive me if I have offended anyone. I am new at this.

hm, no, I guess doing the wineroute on one day will be something like a race. For You want to taste the wine of course. And driving after that is not a hit. So I would do it on 2 days - and perhaps You must not do the whole route. Some things look very similar.

Paris - well You be there in about 5 hours by car from Mannheim. And for sure Paris is worth a weekend.
