Stuttgart: Cheap Eats & ALEX 30 Hostel
 

Hi! I'm staying in Stuttgart, Germany for a week before starting my study abroad program. Two questions: (1) Where are some cheap (!!) places to eat? Or, the cheapest grocery store? (2) Has anybody stayed at ALEX 30 Hostel? Would you rec' it? Thanks!

Cheap restaurants are rare, it's usually more expensive than Munich. But you can always get a 7.50€ pizza...
Grocery stores: Look for "Aldi", "Lidl" and "Plus". They're everywhere.

Hmm. I didn't realize Stuttgart was on the expensive side, though I've heard about Munich. Thanks for the store tips, logos999. Guess I'll be cooking for myself and eating pizza! :-)

You'll find groceries to be generally less expensive than in the US. Milk, cheese and and everything subsidized by the EU is very inexpensive compared to the rest of western europe. 1.5 liters of Pepsi cost 75ct. Strawberries are outrageously expensive this season. ;-)
Go to Max&Moritz for a pizza :-).

logos, what are You talking about? More expensive than Munich - very funny to read. There are a lot of cheap restaurants in Stuttgart where lunch (Tagesmenü) starts at 5 Euro. Lidl, Aldi, Plus are not always cheap and the quality is sometimes not worth to talk about (fruits are awefull). Ask the guys in the Alex, they sure can recommand cheap places to eat. For lunch one of the best choises is to a butchers shop where they sell complete lunch.

if you are a student, get an ISIC (International Student Identification Card) whic allows you to eat at the university commons - called Mensa in German

The grocery chains have been named by logos999, in the moment, Plus seems to have the best prize/value ratio.

There are a lot of places offering snacks, as fried sausage, french fries and the like.

There are also shops offering "Asia" i.e asian take away food, as well as Turks selling Döner. Goes best with a drink calles Ayran - a kind of thin youghurt, vera refreshing and cheaper than any other drink you can get there.

Logos. Nice to see that our marketing stategies works well ;-) I was talking about dont giving You a good deal every time. Also they are discounters, so You do not get a lot of things and have to go to other supermarkets to get everything You want/need. Alternatives are for ex: Dixie, Edeka, Penny, and the local markets. Also: we are talking about a few Cents. I dont know whether hunting for this is a job when beeing on holidays.

PS: I live in Stuttgart and I'm two times a week in Munich. So dont talk to me about which one is cheaper.

Btw: You have forgotten to tell me that Lidl and Aldi sell premium quality.

gargamel, this is to tell you that Lidl and Aldi sell premium quality! The same stuff as the other shops, but less expensive.
