Tallulah: Maybe you have not been following PLMN posts as many of us have.

She has managed to agonize about everything: how does one check into a hotel in Italy, how much does it rain in Italy, and on, and on, and on. This is just one more in a series of at least 549 largely useless questions...

Eloise: I'm not a religous person but I thank somebody that this is the only one of these questions that I've seen!

Oh, I forgot the best question of all: whether the feast of St. Francis of Assisi in early October would interfere with her travel plans in Rome...

Take the coat, it's new and you like it. Put it in the zipper pouch that is most likely on the outside of your suitcase. Skip the umbrella.

Tip: Since you mention "rolling carry on", are you planning to actually take it on the flight or check it thru? I ask because international flights are often strick as to WEIGHT of your bag, not just size, that you are allowed to bring on the plane with you.

Don't want you to have a surprise when you check in at the airport and they insist you check your suitcase.

p.s. I live in notoriously rainy Seattle, Washington and do not own an umbrella, so I certainly wouldn't pack one for Italy in the fall!

PLMN, me again. Maybe you should take a bag that is a little larger so you won't have to agonize over repacking it every time you change locations. This way you will have room for purchases.

You will be with your parents so you won't be doing carting around your suitcases that much will you? If you take taxis, etc. you can handle a few more inches of bag space.

Hi PLMN. Don't worry! I bought that same raincoat in 1998 before a trip to Spain and you won't believe how much wear I've gotten out of it over the years, both here and abroad. TravelSmith even sent me new buttons for FREE when I lost some. No, it doesn't have a designer label in it, but it sure is versatile. Oh, by the way, I usually take it, it's zip out liner AND a $7.95 travel umbrella! Silly me...

PLMN,
I never bring an umbrella with me on any of our trips.
We were lucky every time in London and Paris, with the exception of a rainy morning in London, when I walked into a Boots and bought a beautiful small umbrella, walked out the door and it quit raining.
In Paris, one day it rained, our hotel loaned us their umbrella.
Raincoats are usually all you need, umbrellas are plentiful and fun to bring back for use at home as a souvenir.
I am off to Portland Oregon, ( land of lots of rain) and I am not bringing an umbrella
I hope you can relax long enough with all this planning the last detail and enjoy this trip. Else you will be too exhausted before you even get there.

If you truly don't want to pack an umbrella, don't. As others have said, they are easily purchased if you need them.

The one day I left my umbrella in the room in Rome (beautiful morning) - that afternoon it started POURING. All the street vendors magically appeared with armfuls of umbrellas. My travel companions and I picked up two for 3 euros each - make sure you bargain with them (they wanted 5 euros per umbrella).

We had good luck with the weather (probably because I made a point of carrying the umbrella everywhere we went)until we reached London, where there were a few days of heavy rainshowers and very windy conditions.

Anyway, the umbrellas are cheap and won't last you longer than the trip - but that's all you're worried about, correct?

As far as using just your raincoat without the umbrella - I guess it depends on how heavy the rain is. My coat had a detachable hood - but during those heavy downpours the hood alone would not have been sufficient for my personal comfort.

See, if I were you, and the raincoat is indeed black microfiber and sufficiently coat-like, I'd use it as my regular coat and ditch the other one you're bringing. The raincoat sounds more versatile.

Unless you plan to carry that umbrella in your day-bag everywhere you go thru your entire trip... I guarantee that the biggest downpour you get caught out in... will be on the day you left the umbrella in the hotel room!!!

Your travel raincoat sound very lightweight(good), and can you roll it up VERY tightly, put rubber bands around it and put it in the bottom of your carryon? Works for me , but mine it 3/4 length. The end of Sept in Italy won't be too cold, and perhaps no rain...but it never hurts to stick in a little folding umbrella. We had to buy one in MARCH in Siena, along the street..it did the purpose but didn't last long.
One time in NOVEMBER in Salzburg Austria it was COLD, pouring rain and we had just taken one little umbrella...so the two of us "shared"! Funny!
The hood on your coat might come in very handy in a rain,..and the coat sounds nice...but I still can't imagine heavy rains in Italy the end of Sept or into first of Oct.
That's earlier than we usually go, but it should be a BEAUTIFUL time in that BEAUTIFUL country.!

Good decision, PLMN, to purchase an umbrella in Italy if you decide you need one. Enjoy your new coat.

Tallulah, since you invited replies, you appear to be vying a certain other poster for Forum Jacka$$. Congrats. You're doing a great job.

Amen Rockhopper7! PLMN, don't pay any attention to Tallulah or Eloise. The other posts have provided plenty of constructive pros and cons. Do what you think you will be comfortable with doing!

Have a wonderful trip!

Tallulah honey,
We will develop some common sense (that you seem to think we need), if you develop some common courtesy and good manners (which you obviously need)...how is that?
cheers, ducky~

"I recommend an Asprey umbrella which will last a lifetime, from 200GBP."

Or until it's left on a bus, tube, theatre, restaurant, etc... Then someone else has a nice £200 umbrella.
