Studio nr Pompidou in Paris - a report

My wife and I stayed in VRBO # 133080 last week (Nov. 2008). We have been to France many times, usually staying in country gites. It was our first time renting an apt in Paris, and our first time with VRBO anywhere. The studio is terrific. It is laid out in a way that makes it roomy and comfortable for two. It is charming with beam ceilings but all appliances are new and modern. Internet, phone (free calls to any land line) and TV service all great. It is on the first floor (i.e. one floor above street level) but has its own private small patio. This is on the central core well, so has no view of anything, but is still a big plus to get some fresh air. In warm weather it would be wonderful for meals. The studio is just a couple of blocks from Pompidou Centre, just off Rue Rambuteau. It's a very lively area, but even though the studio is just a few steps off Rambuteau on a side street, all is calm and quiet. The building is very secure. The location is perfect for anybody wanting to explore Marais, Ile de la Cite, Ile St. Louis, etc. It's any easy walk to left bank, Palais Royale, Louvre, etc. Just a few blocks away, rue Montorgueil is a foodie's paradise. If you want to cook, you'll be on that street daily. The owner (American) is in Paris and easily accessible and very much interested in seeing that all is well. We would stay there again in a heartbeat. In fact, the morning of the day before we left I was sitting on the terrace and told my wife, "I already miss this place and we're still here!" I can wholeheartedly recommend this place and cannot imagine staying in a hotel again. We felt as is we were living in Paris, if only for a week.

Vedette, I remember you asking questions about accomodations in Paris before you went on your trip, so I'm glad you found a winner, and glad you told us all about it. I took a look at it and it does look very comfortable. You might want to leave a favorable comment on the vrbo website listing. The owner will be very pleased to display it, and you can still remain anonymous if that's what you'd prefer.

Thanks for the review. We liked this neighborhood so much in '07 that we have rented there for '09.

I tried to find the Paris Apartments thread and I was going to post a link here for you, but as usual, the Fodor's Talk search engine leaves a bit to still be desired.

If you can, could you please post your review to that thread?

I have to get to sleep for a 5 am surgery wake up, or I would keep looking.

vedette, thanks for writing this up.

Here's a link to the Paris apartment thread that tuscanlifeedit was referring to. It would be great if you'd add a review on it:

That looks like a great place to stay!
Did you feel completely safe? It looks amazingly comfortable for a studio, and so reasonably priced, too!

vedette,
Sorry about the misspelling - distracted at home!

The owner of the VRBO apartment you stayed in has 3 other apartments that look nice and very well-priced. I like your apartment the best, but the other Marais apartment looks quite nice, too.

You found a winner! Thank you again!

vedette,

I'm planning to take this apartment in May, but would like to know what the neighborhood was like. What's the actual location of the apartment?

Was it safe or was there anytime you wouldn't want to be out? The neighborhood, did it feel okay?

Thanks! This question is also on the apartment thread, but I'd love to hear from you, since you did stay there.

Thanks!
Paule

We looked at this apartment and seriously considered renting it for our trip next May but were concerned that there seemed to be no windows, making the door to the patio the only way to get air into the apartment.

That's fine for November but when we were in Paris last May, it was in the mid 80s every day for 10 days. I would want to be able to leave a window open while out of the apartment to keep things cool. Were there any windows in the apartment?

We ended up renting an apartment in the 15th for our next trip, with an amazing terrace with a view of the Eiffel Tower and multiple windows. Not the Marais, but hopefully we'll be happy there.

Well, I've rented it for a week in early May, and I'll let you know about the ventilation.

That's a good point - I hadn't considered the lack of windows, although one of the 3 reviews on the website was from a couple who stayed during the summer, and they gave the apartment an excellent review, so I'm hopeful.

So far, the owner (an American woman) is very responsive, and I'm sure it will suit our needs. Now to wait the 5 months!
