Student Visa, then Travel Visa?

I will be studying in Germany this fall. For fifteen days before, I will be traveling. The program has told us (and I have confirmed on the regional consulate's website) that I arrive in Hamburg, then have them process and give me my student visa. I'm fine with that.

My question is how I deal with staying after my program ends. I will be traveling for about 2.5 weeks after the program (within Schengen zone countries), which brings me into January. Will this be a problem? How am I supposed to deal with this?
