Stud Dudley & others who are experienced in renting gites
Hello,
I would certainly appreciate any wisdom you have to offer.(Stu Dudley, if you read this--thank you for the Brittany/Normandy itinerary)
I have recently found a gite through Gites de France. The proprietors do not accept credit cards or checks, but on finding that we are not in Europe, they have offered to waive any deposit.
They asked that we confirm reservations a month prior to arrival (late fall trip)and stated that our correspondence through e-mail would serve as our contract.
I am certainly grateful not to have to wire, but was wondering if I should be concerned to the security of the reservation. I have looked at countless gites and all have required atleast a deposit. Please tell me your thoughts on this.

The same thing has happened to us a few times, with no problems at all. However, all have had contracts written. Just to make sure, communicate with them & get a contact. There is a standard Gites-de-France form that they should probably have.
There have been several threads about how to get money to people in Europe from the US. PayPal seems to work, but I don't remember the mechanics. You could obtain a check in Euros from your bank, but that's quite costly - like $40 or so.
Try to get my name correct in the subject next time - I won't show this post to my wife.

Two of the five gîtes we've rented
this Spring have waived the deposit.
I'm not at all worried that we'll find outselves homeless b/c of this.
When I asked one owner why she didn't want a deposit she said she'd
never had a problem w/people reneging. The other owner said I
could send a deposit or just pay when I get there. So it happens.
