Stuck in Birmingham UK. Where to go?
My company will keep me in Birmingham, UK after an event in July. We have another event in Switzerland about four days later, but rather than fly us on to Switzerland, they're putting us up in Birmingham and then flying us later. My question is this: What would be an economical three day trip from Birmingham? Or perhaps three short day-trips returning to the company paid hotel for overnight. Is Ireland an option? Is there a rail route around England that might be interesting? I'm not ruling out going early (on my own dime) to Europe and getting myself to Switzerland for the event. Give me some ideas. And thanks in advance.

Were I in your situation, I'd day-trip from your B'ham hotel to the Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon.
There are many, many attractive things to do in that area! |
You have a ton of options w/o leaving the country.
From B'ham you could easily do day trips to north or south Wales, to the Cotswolds/Forest of Dean, to Stratford-upon-Avon/Warwick, to Bath, to London, Gloucester or Worcester, to York -- or of course in to London. Most of these can easily be done by train -- but you'll see more in Wales and the Cotswolds if you have a car. Of courses any of these could also be an overnight trip. |
One interesting rail route from there is to go to Shrewsbury (about an hour away) and then take the scenic mid-Wales line to Aberystwyth on the coast.

For the first day, is Cardiff in Wales worth seeing? If not, what town in Wales that is on a rail route would be your choice?
For the second day, how about Nottingham? Worth seeing? If not, please suggest a rail-accessible day-trip. |
would skip cardiff..id go along the north coast of wales...chester and shrewsbury in the uk.
