Stromboli, Vulcano o Lipari
We are taking the overnight ferry from Naples. We thought to stop overnight on Stromboli to climb up the volcano, but I understand it is now closed off above 400m . Can anyone verify this?
Would we be better offf stopping over on Vulcano or Lipari and going out by boat to see Stromboli from the sea? The ferry arrives at Stromboli at 5 AM and we'd leave at 9:30 AM the next day. I imagine the ferry would get to Lipari about 3 hours later. We'd departing Naples y=the evening of the 25 September for the islands and then on to Sicily. Also does anyone have moderate cost hotel recommendations on these 3 islands. Thanks AndrewDavid |
I'm having troble getting my new queries to show up after I send them?

AndrewDavid - According to this link, the summit has now been reopened to the public again - but you must be accompanied by a guide.

I stayed on Panarea for 8 nights a few years ago & while I didn't actually visit any of the other islands we stopped en route at Volcano & Lipari, we had a view of Sromboli & I've read quite a bit about them all.
Vulcano was weird, at least what we could see & experience from the dock. It smelled off sulphur & seemed enveloped in a yellowish haze. I've never read that it has much going for it. As I'm sure you know, Lipari is the biggest tourist island & it looks quite pretty; but if you are only staying one night & are mainly interested in Stromboli, why not just stay on Stromboli ? It looks very pretty & everyone seems to rave about it. Don't know much about climbing it, but in the summer at least you can take a boat round the island after dark to see the lava flowing down the other side (i.e. the opposite side to the inhabited one !). I'm quite sorry we didn't do that, but when we were on Panarea it wasn't that warm at night (late April/early May). Or stay on Panarea & just watch the top of the cone glowing every 10 minutes, over a Negroni or 2 (which is what we did :-) ). What time of year are you going ? |
Sorry, just noticed you did give your dates.
