STROMBOLI blows its' top -- Sicily/Italy; Any volcano afficianados?

HOLY MOLY ~ this is what I call blowing one's top - Darn, missing great photo ops !!! After a couple trips to Costa Rica, I've developed a fascination with volcanoes. Was thinking about a visit to explore Sicily, Mt. Etna and the Aeolian Islands. I can't believe Stromboli is going & blowing without me !!! Anyone out there who's had an up close & personal experience with one of these volcanoes?

Stromboli blows its top

Italy's second-most active volcano, Stromboli, is continuing to spew ash, a day after an eruption that injured six people.
Tourists are banned from the island, also called Stromboli, which the volcano towers over.

Visiting Stromboli by ferry is a truly exciting experience. I highly recommend it, even if you don't hike to the top.

I'm thinking of going out in sympathy with my southern cousins.

You have been warned.

It wouldn't surprise me, Vesuvius. You are way overdue for some action.

Hiked to the top of Vesuvius last month - what a rush! Actually, Vesuvius is NOT overdue, but it was smoking. When it goes, though, it will be a huge disaster. It was eery training back from Vesuvius to Sorrento - we were reading the history of Vesuvius and what towns had been destroyed time and again, as we were stopping at those very same towns.
