Stressa or Varenna? Maggiore or Como?

We are traveling to the Italian lakes region in June and I am hoping to narrow down our choices for a home base to lovely accomodations in either Stressa or Varenna.

While I was concerned that Lake Como was too touristy and the other Lakes were just as nice, but more quaint, I'm beginning to think that Lake Como is popular for very particular reasons and there are many lovey little villages in that area.

Does any Italy aficianado have an opinion about choosing one locale over another? We are certainly going to have a car to drive around to most anywhere for day trips, so I am looking for the spot that is best to come back to at night and as a home base.

Thanks in advance.

Faced with a similar decision last year, we chose Lugano for our one-week stay - and glad we did. It's the most scenic of the Lakes IMO and is centrally located amongst them...

Hi R,

I only did a day trip (on a rany, cloudy day) to Como so can't say how it would be for a real visit.

We did stay 2 nights at Maggiore on Isola dei Pescatori, just off Stresa and loved it! Hotel Verbano was very nice, we had a double room and large bathroom, huge lake front terrace shared with 2 other rooms. Views to die for and good restaurant.

We did really enjoy boating to the other islands, seeing the gardens at Villa Taranto, and the town of Stresa too. Would have definitely liked to have another day there!

Buon viaggio!

Thanks for the input. Topping for any other comments.

Hmmm...If you're looking to "go quaint," you could do a lot worse than Lake Orta, IMHO. It's small, scenic, pleasant, and a short drive away from Lake Maggiore.

Search this board, there's no shortage of threads on Orta. Just a thought.

Orta....yes, yes, yes....Stresa was nice, but we absolutely loved the area around Orta.

You're right IMO..there are many who prefer Lake Como for any number of reasons, myself included.

Too touristy? Not IMO but I suppose you'll go with the majority so not sure I can convince you.
