strategery for visiting Windsor Castle

Hi, we are in our 70s, some mild mobility issues. Probably can last 2hours possibly 3 hours then need a rest or finished for the day, . Plan to arrive in Heathrow from USA in evening, stay in Windsor and visit the Castle the next day, hopefully to see the changing of the guards if logistically feasible (will be a Thursday). I know there are trade offs with everything; best to get on line at 9am with prepaid tickets? or midday (if raining then not as interested in waiting on lines), particularly when we will run out of steam after a few short hours. The following day will tour Cottswold and subsequently finish with the guide taking us to our London hotel ( so Wednesday and Thursday nights in Windsor). Also, wish advise on a strategy on how to visit the Castle: where exactly is the entrance-is it at the lower ward or the upper ward ?

If I were you, I'd visit Windsor in the mid-AM, visit St Georges chapel and see the Guard Change @ 11:00 AM visit one of the gift shops etc, (all in the lower ward) -- then leave (you can get a re-entry ticket) and have a nice relaxing lunch nearby. Then return to the Castle for the State Rooms/Dolls House - except for security, you won't have to queue with the re-entry tix.

About an hour for the first visit and 2-ish hours in the afternoon with a lunch break in between.

The entrance is at the corner of Castle Hill & St. Alban's St.

We took the morning trains from London to Windsor. The lines at Windsor Castle stretched dien the hill to the statue of Queen Victoria. We had pre purchased our tickets and entered the building at the head of the line. We were inside quickly. We saw the Changing of the Guard, then visited St. George Chapel followed by the Castle. It all went very smoothly. You can do this at your own pace. Our favorite part was St. George Chapel.

Thanks. Sounds like a good plan, but it sounds that the lines are quite long throughout the morning, so when would mid morning be to start on the line for entrance.

My advice, pre-order the earliest timed tickets (we were first ones in). This way you'll avoid most of the hordes of tourists and have an enjoyable time. We spent a couple of hours. Link below to our morning there (with photos)
