Strasbourg France & Tampere Finland Local Culture
 

When I travel, I like to be able to watch performances that I am unlikely to experience here in Australia - eg Male Voice Choir in Wales, Ice Hockey game in Canada, etc.

I will be in Tampere the last two weeks of July, and Strasbourg the first three weeks of August. I'm hoping that there are some 'locals' out there who can let me know of any performances that I am likely to be able to enjoy in these areas.

I'll have a car, so will be able to travel reasonable distances days or evenings to reach venues.

What are your plans?

While in Finland, you will want to experience a sauna, preferably one by a lake so that you can jump into the cold water after being heated to a comfy 40 C.

Thanks, Ira . . . I was trying for something that would not take me quite so far out of my comfort zone, though!

As background, we are doing home exchanges in both places, so will have a base to travel from each day, and the use of a car.

In countries where English is the local language, it's easy to read newspapers, signs etc to find out about local 'happenings'. But my VERY basic French and German from school days won't be of much use in these two stays.

Having said that, we once finished up listening to a most unusual musical performance in a little village outside Salzburg - my interpretation of the street notices was that we would see highschool students playing Handel's 'Water Music'; this turned out to be a very professional performance in a highschool auditorium by a modern jazz trio - all pieces of music had 'water' as their theme; not what we expected, but extremely enjoyable all the same.

Anyway, looks like there are all kinds of things in Tampere at the end of July: park concerts, jazz, rowing competition, tango evenings, arts and crafts market, summer night organ concert, Tampere flamenco week, Floral festival, Salsa festival, Finnish Championships in Athletics... You definitely should do a steamship cruise that goes either north of Tampere to Ruovesi or south of of Tampere to Hämeenlinna. Those are summer classics. Beautiful.
