Strasbourg Christmas market
 

I just spent two days in Strasbourg to see the Christmas market. I have been there numerous times in the past, including in December, but this was the first time that I had complete control over my time and activities since I was not spending time with friends. That was really very good, but I'm sure that a lot of you will also understand that there is something missing when you are not sharing such an experience with another important person. You can't have it all.

In any case, it gave me the opportunity to take a ton of photos and even make a video, so that's kind of cool I suppose, assuming that what I do interests any of you.

Yeah, it brought back good memories. I was just there two weeks ago. It was magical walking from markets to markets on streets lit up differently.

Really great to see and read this. I am actually thinking another trip over for some of those Christmas markets might not be such a bad idea as similar as some of them seem to be.

Thanks for all the photos. The Strasbourg Christmas market is impressive indeed. However, when I lived near Strasbourg in the early 1970's, it was a very modest thing, confined to Place Broglie which I understand was its traditional site down through the centuries.

In fact in those days, those of us who wanted to see a large market like today's would travel to Nuremburg for its famous Christkindlsmarkt.

Obviously many other cities and towns have now expanded their Christmas market and the Christmas Market river cruises are booming.

I also enjoyed seeing the photos of Obernai, one of my favourite Alsatian towns.

Merci Kerouac. Beautiful photos with lots of detail. I have visited the Strasbourg markets twice and was there just two weeks ago. I loved the atmosphere of the market in the shadow of the cathedral and am looking at a little Christmas tree candle holder that I bought there. Much more enjoyable to me than the crowded markets of Nuremburg and Cologne. Thanks again for sharing.

I would love to be there. I really like walking in the cold, as long as I'm dressed for it.

I was at a Christmas market in Copenhagen some years ago. Tivoli Gardens is opened for a few weeks at Christmas time. It was fun, I got a couple of ornaments for my tree and will bring them out again tomorrow as I finish decorating our tree.

I love mulled wine, especially when it's cold but it can have a kick if you aren't careful. I stuck to one cup.

Another great photo report. We love Strasbourg (but only in summer, hate the cold!) and it was so interesting to see the goods sold, the food and the street scenes. I will never go in winter, so this is a fabulous way to experience it from the warmth of an Aussie summer :)

Wonderful trip report, Kerouac! My husband and I are headed back to Strasbourg on a river cruise next week. We will arrive Christmas Eve and dock there overnight. Being from Hawaii, the cold looks daunting, but I'm looking forward to the change of scene, and of course, the markets. I wonder how long they might be open on Christmas Eve?

The 24th is the last day of the market in Strasbourg. Normally they close at 9pm on Saturdays, but it would not be the least bit surprising if they shut down 2 or 3 hours earlier on that date.

I was there two weeks ago and now planning to go back in the warm weather. We stayed in Colmar and took the train to Strasboug for the market. What a great place! Enjoyed Colmars market also, they go all out too. Your pictures are better than mine.
